View Full Version : Fuel Tank capacity? 45L ish?

Read a couple of thread about this and I'm thinking the capacity on the VTS mk1 is about 45litres plus reserve?
Well, following on from my thread the other day, I'm still having filling probs.
I mentioned that I was filling up and the pump was saying the tank was full, I could see petrol brimming over the edge of the filler neck, yet the fuel gauge only reads 3quarters full!
Now, I dont think it is a sender error, as the petrol is like I say brimming over the edge of the filler neck (as if it def were full!).
Have I got something blocked somewhere, or a stupidly smaller fuel tank?!
Thanks.

if it were me i'd fit a new sender unit just to be sure. cheap and easy to replace iirc
as far as i know all vtr and vts are 45l. states the capacity in haynes anyway

is the sender unit the part that floats in the tank to let u no how much fuel is in there?
if not check if thats ur problem, it could be getting stuck

Does it go down from there like normal or sit there for ages then start going down??

Its 40 Litres (or maybe 43, But sure its 40) with 5 Litres reserve.
Thats the same for any Saxo.

45litre tank across the whole range according to both owner's book and haynes. And I always thought it was 35

i reckon fuel guage is fucked you got a full tank but needle is only goin up 3/4

thing is though, its only taking 25/26litres from when apparently empty.
Fuel light is on. It does stay at 3quarters for bit, then start going down steadily.

Haynes isnt correct in this case, some models were fitted with 35l tanks and some 45.
Have you tried filling up, then driving around waiting for your fuel to run out mate? And count the mileage. Just see what the fuel reading is at the end. Carry a 5l tank around in the boot for a bit

might be an idea actually mate. Good thinking. Its still annoyng the gauge isn't up at full lol

Aye, it's true about the different tank capacitys.
Does seem strange mate, unfortunately I ain't so techincal minded so I cannot advise but I hope you get it sorted.

It could be something as simple as the needle being alligned on the motor badly mate

My tank doesnt seem 45l im lucky if I can put more than £35 worth of petrol in my car.

IIRC some are a 35L tank as mentioned above & the rest are 45L. I think it was only the early or late VTS which had the smaller tank.
How does the fuel level system work in the saxo? Might help explain what could cause your misreadings? How much does the pump say is going in?

Fuel level system in on the fuel pump mate, its like a small plastic float on a trailing arm at the bottom of the pump. And then at the part next to where the arm attaches to the pump has a clear electric pad on it with different segments which the boom is in contact with.

Well when I fill up, when my fuel light has been on for 10 miles or so, I only seem to get 25-27 litres in (ish), and it literally is brimming over the filler neck into the bit arouund the edge at top.

Hmm, so maybe something to do with your float Al? Might be hanging off the arm so the readings always less or something?

I really do need to get it apart and have a look, but being without a project car in over a year and just having to drive a range rover company car its made me somewhat lazy!

IF your only getting in like 30 litres surly nothing to do with the float??

Yea thats what I'm thinking

If the flaot is under reading though then theres still 20 lites in the tank when it puts the fuel light on saying your empty, so you fuill up as much as it will take (another 20 litres) & its still under reading and thinks your only 3/4 full.

that could be true mate. Good thinking.
Think Im going to take a jerry can of fuel about with me once the light comes on and check how many miles it lasts

might be doing this today aswell.
How do I check the fuel sender then ?
