View Full Version : Is it wrong to like a Proton

Am I crazy to have a silly soft spot for one.#
http://www.motorbase.com/pictures/contributions/20000905/std_2000_Proton_Satria_GTi_fvl.jpg
Based the old Mitsubishi Colt that ran from 1992 to 1996.
base-model versions of the Satria used a 1.3-litre engine with a 1.5-litre option for those who wanted more, the GTi ditched both those powerplants and went straight for a 1.8-litre unit with double overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder.
It wasn't the smoothest engine around but it certainly did the job.
Came equipped with "Lotus tuned suspension"
http://www.motorbase.com/pictures/contributions/20000905/std_2000_Proton_Satria_GTi_interior.jpg
During the involvement of Lotus,a new body kit was also adopted for the GTi for better aerodynamics. Proton claims that the Satria GTi was the fastest car it has ever produced to date. Oh how I laugh, cos its true!
The Proton Satria R3 is a limited edition Satria sold in Malaysia. The term R3 stands for Race, Rally, Research. R3 is a redefined version of Satria Gti by Proton's Racing development team and also Lotus. It houses the same 1800 cc Mitsubishi 4G93p engine but has undergone some minor adjustments by Lotus handling. Bodyshell has been improved with double stitch welded monocoque chassis with front and rear strut tower brace bars

Suppose they would probably give a vts a run for it's money.
Seats are good as well iirc.

Trying to think of who proton are owned by or are they like mitsubishi and are just the one company and not expanding majorly?
Had a think a while back about one, can look nice and if "street cred" *ahem* doesn't bother you like some people would be a good car to run round. The 1.8 certainly would surprise a few people.

proton city.... city for proton car building and workforce living...
Proton City tagged as “City of the Future”, is a new township with industrial, commercial and residential activities spread over 4,000 acres (16 km²). It is located about 5 km north of Tanjung Malim, a town in Perak, Malaysia, and houses the state-of-the-art RM1.8 billion Proton car assembly plant.
To be fully developed by 2020, Proton City aims to be home to Malaysia’s automobile industry. Undertaken by Proton City Development Corp Sdn Bhd, a joint venture between DRB-Hicom Bhd and Proton Bhd, it started in 1996 with an initial investment of RM2.5 billion, beginning with the construction of the Proton plant. The Proton plant has a workforce of more than 2,000 and most of them are expected to live in the area. When Proton City is fully developed, it would have a population of about 240,000.

If they are anything like the Mitsibishi Mireage Cyborg ZR (the car they're based on) i'd rather save my cash and buy a civic. Below is a link to a site explaining why and also bear in mind for the test they used the heavier EK4 SiR-2 rather than the lighter EG6 which has the same engine as the EK4.
http://asia.vtec.net/side/cyborg/
Despite the Mirage having more torque and BHP and also less weight it still can't match the Civic.

His stuck a full stainless exhaust system on, manifold, air filters, alloys, lowered, uprated suspension buckets, roll cage. you name it, his done it.
Fact is, he'll keep it 3 months then sell it on.

You keep calling them but your car looks abit like that at moment lol.
Satria GTI's are very good cars. Aparrently drive mint. My dad's boss had one, id have had it off him but at the time insurance was a problem. Then not long after the guy who bought it off him crashed it. As pointed out, the newer ones look good too.

they are a fine handling car my oldman had one, but laquer started to peal when my dad jetwashed it the paint was like it was falling off the arch lol.
also shocker went after 1 trip down to wales 4 up. but other than that think they are reliable enough and they are damn good fun. with how cheap they are going it was another car on the list before i bought the vts but there was no way i was paying group 18 insurance on a car slower than the vts and my mg zs.

I'd love one of them tbh.
Its 4-cylinder 1998cc DOHC normally aspirated engine is based on the 1.8 liter Renault engine in the Waja. It produces 280hp at 7,800rpm and a massive 271Nm of torque at 7,000rpm, and is installed transversely at the front of the car. This engine is mated to an Xtrac 6-speed sequential transmission with Alcon clutch and 3 player LSD.

I just got one of these 2 month ago and they are great
Comes with the same engine from the old mitsu lancer gsr 1.8 but just without the turbo ;)
Ive got hold of a full turbo kit from the gsr and its all going straight back on - decent boost reaches 210bhp no bother and that only on low comp gasket, and with the handling it gona be one beast of a car
Handles superb, very rare, very realible and mega cheap - i paid £1400 for a 2002 with only 36,000 miles.
Only bad bits is they get surface rust easy, and i dont no what to call it as im not sayin its a proton :P
