Hey Guys n Gals,

Recently i've started to wonder about getting a new car.

Ive been looking into insurance and I can finally afford to get a 106 GTI :D
I've waited a long time for this, but as i'm only 19 insurance has been my main concern.

As i've never actually drove one I was just wondering a few things...

1. Is there a huge difference in power compared to a standard VTR?
2. Do they drive the same? As in the handle etc?
3. Are they reliable? I'm going to look for a nice sundance yellow one, preferably a 53 plate with few miles and good history etc.
4. Do you guys like them?

Cheers :)

Insurance will be hefty at 19 (provided its in your name as it should be), I got a VTS at that age and insurance wasn't cheap.

They are very good cars the 106 GTi's, plenty to recommend them.

More power top end, drive pretty much the same from what i have been told.
No more or less unreliable than a vts, ive had problems with mine but nothing thats let me down.
If you buy a yellow one you just throwing money away as they oddly seem to cost at least a grand more than any other colour cos they "rarer" which bollocks are they, mines a rarer colour ;)
106 gti is cheaper to insure than a vts also

It would either have to be the same colour as your Bickerton(mint btw) white, or the sundance yellow. They are the best colours i've seen so far.

My VTR is very unreliable, and I'm scared of taking it to FCS as it probably wont make it there. Just had problem after problem. I'm hoping I should be able to find a GTI which is alot more reliable? Ive got 5k to spend, so i'm hoping this should be enough to buy a nice one in good nick?

5k would get you a minter, but, if i were spending 5k on a car it wouldnt be a saxo/106 tbh

Sundance Yellow ... I hope you're saving hard for that. Rip off prices atm.
You say your VTR is unreliable? 106 GTi is the same car under the body ... Could be just as unreliable.

106 gtis fetch a premium for some daft reason, (i suspect it to do with 106 owners thinking they are a better car than a vts) as per usual.

Personally you can get cheaper Vts's usually, with lower milage for good money, or even early cliosports.

I know which id have and its not the GTI tbh

i upgraded from a VTR to a VTS, wanted a 106gti, but tbh they cost loads and all you get is a high miler. can buy a decent S for just over 2k with around 50k miles and FSH

if i had more money i would have gone for the 106gti, looking back i think they look awful in comparison to a mk2 S.

insurance is about an extra £100 on the S than it would have been on the gti for me

dont rush into buying one though, its hard to find a MINT gti, but when you do it'll be worth the wait

agreed also that yellow gti's are a ripoff

as said by bickerton and ryan, 5k would be going elsewhere if it was me

I think gti's fetch more as there seems to be less about, i assume that was mostly down to the free insurance saxo's used to come with.
You do seem to get more/newer for your money with a vts over a gti, it's all down to whats about at the time and for how much, my gti was cheaper that a similar saxo at that time so went for it.

Woulda probably bought a saxo if i didn't need to have done 100 posts to look in the for sale section when i was looking for a car ;)

Well I want a 172, but insurance on one of them is even more than the GTI, n i couldnt afford it. Ive always liked the 106 GTI, but i want a nice car, but one that will be reliable too. lol, and something that Mr Insurance couldnt rape me with.

Look at a C2 vts, they are sickly low price on the ol insurance vs saxo/106
And totally viable for 5k

Nah theres alot of 106gtis about, its mostly brand snobbery imo. Being on both 106/saxo forums the shit i read about saxos not being as good as 106s is unreal.

Both PSA cars, only difference is leather interior and a thicker (not allways) rear ARB really lol.

Sorry about for sale, blame scammers for that, but I know of several forums operating this policy now.

Have you checked fully? as it shouldnt be alot different on premium prices

I really don't understand the snobbery really, they both cheap french cars made outta old kitkat wrappers.

And the leather interior 90% of em are ratty ass shit that has more lines on it than a spidersweb (got cloth myself more comfy and looks tidier imo)

Neither do I. I laugh alot about it and the high levels of idiocy I see relating to it.

Same car just a different badge..

lol, yeah i prefer the rule tbh, doesnt bother me as i allready had a couple of thousand posts when the rule was introduced, just got annoying noobs with no common sence sending money to other noobs claiming they had stuff for sale, ive only ever bought from trusted members, its not hard to use your brain once in a while!

and yeah, agree with the leather, been looking for a set of leathers but theyre all in awful condition, that was one thing that put me off when looking for a gti tbh,

I've been looking around and I guess the c2 VTS would be the better option. Alot newer, better looking and i'm hoping more reliable. Will have to check out insurances :)

Mate sell me the crimson saxo if you get red, i want 2 of the same colour lol
Serious not though, my saxo hasnt ever really let me down, odd idle problem now and again but nothing i would consider getting red of it for. If i could afford a vts i would but insurance rapes me. Would much rather plod along in the vtr not hammering it and it be quite reliable, handles quite well too

Well i've looked at the C2 VTS's and they're cheaper on insurance for me than a GTI, so i'm going to get one i think. I just need to find a decent one ready for FCS. I guess i wont be parking with the saxp lot if i come in my c2 hey :(
