Does anyone have them?

Got a fish tank of a friend a few weeks back and finally got round to
cleaning it out etc today. Rinsed it and wiped it with salty water!

So i went and purchased some stones, filter, and a heater today! Came to
£50 smileys/smiley3.gif

So no i have a fish tank full of water with stone murkyish water (even after
rinsing the stones!) and lots of bubbles coming from the pump thing, but
no fish!!

I haven't fully decided on what fish to buy!! Thinking of getting some
angel fish to start with as they look pretty cool!! I've got to wait till
thursday before i buy the fish tho so that the tank settles down etc...

Do any of you have fish? and what type do you have?

Photos to come in a bit

did you flush it down the tolier then two days later found it swimming around ? lol

Tony_Jay86
15th November 2005, 23:46
No,

first time, we was getting a new bigger fish tank as it was getting to big for the one we had, so we put it in a container kind of thing & kept it in there over night, i woke up the next morning to find it wasnt in it, i looked on the floor & there it was all dry & didnt move, put it back in the water holding it pushing it back & forth to get water in its gills & it came back to life.

second time, i was cleaning out the fish tank & put it in freezing cold water, & it floated to the top & wouldnt move, so my dad put some warm water in & did the back to forth again to get water in its gills & it came back to life.#

smileys/smiley5.gif

I dont see why it hasnt died yet, ive had it atleast 10 years & it still swims around asthough it was a young fish.

My dads cousin is into his fish, iam not sure what kind they are, but he bought a fish, think it was a fighting fish, it kept killing all his fish so he had to get rid of it, think he paid around £50 for it, & one of the fish it killed was the hardest fish in there, he's spent thousands on fish & has a huge tank.

barrett
15th November 2005, 23:56
Yeah the fighting fish are awsome, i wanted to get some of them but
there isnt a great deal of point as they kill everything!

This is just a starting point but the tank is pretty big so hopefully plan to
get a fair few types of cool fish in there, but obv try not to over crowd it!

barrett

leave the tank for a week or so matey!! smileys/smiley10.gif

You reckon a week or just till its cleared up etc?

The guy in the shop said to go back to them of thursday or friday. I was
planning to wait till then see if the water is fully clear then get them, just
4 to start with so i build up the bacteria etc and then get a plant and
some more in about a week or 2?

Scott
16th November 2005, 05:00

i too have tropical fish, i got them in a quality pine cabinet, used to be downstairs, but i had them in my room when we were decorating a few years back, still got them. will post some pics too..... barrett, make sure the tank has been set up and running for 2 days before you add fish , gives everything time to settle and for the chlorine to evaporate from the water, oh and if you get real plants, look for snails!!!! smileys/smiley11.gif

barrett
16th November 2005, 19:28
I will keep an eye out for snails. I saw some funky snails like yellow ones
that just lurk at the bottom, would it be worth getting them or would they
just eat the plant?

I filled it up on tuesday afternoon, and i'm going to wait till either friday
or saturday to buy the fish. Not sure what kind of fish to start with.
Thinking of some angel fish and prehaps something else

stevossaxo
16th November 2005, 19:35
yea angel fish are generally nice natured, but they do have a tendensey so nipp others with long tails, like guppys etc, yeah the water will be fine then, i just would avoid the snails mate, they will eat plants and breed like mad, before you know it they will eat plants and take over the tank mate

AARON1100
16th November 2005, 19:39
ive got tropical fish, and possibly the biggest angel fish in the world!!!

the best fish to start with imo are tetra's and gourami's simlpy because they're hardy fish.

congo frogs are pretty cool too!

AARON1100
16th November 2005, 19:42
fighting fish really only fight if you have more than one!

also alot of other fish do nip them,

barrett
16th November 2005, 20:01
yeah i was reading about the angel fish nipping the guppy's. I also read
thought that they would only really start doing that when they got bigger.
i was going to buy a small one and watch it grow.

tetra's and gourami. What do these ones look like. They have to be cool
looking smileys/smiley2.gif

stevossaxo
16th November 2005, 20:05
lol cool looking! tetras are hard to breed, i have bread guppys mollies platies etc..... angel fish etc are extremely hard to breed.... smileys/smiley10.gif

barrett
16th November 2005, 20:23
what do you do with them once they bread? Have loads of fish or do you
take the babies out and sell them?
\

stevossaxo
16th November 2005, 20:40
keep them in a breeding trap untill thay are big enough for the tank, a breeding trap floats at the top of the main tank so no need for an additional set upp or anything like that, worth a buy mate

Scott
16th November 2005, 21:17
guppies breed like fucking rabbits! we bred hundreds of the fuckers though the majority become food for the other fish unless you use a seperate tank.

Neon teras rock, im pretty sure it was them or the tiger barbs that finished off the fighting fish

stevossaxo
16th November 2005, 21:55
neon tetras arnt aggressive mate! maybe it was the tiger barbs, known to be a bit nippy! yea piranahs are superb!

barrett
17th November 2005, 01:55
how do you get the fish to mate in the first place though? Are they
rampant and get it on with any old male or what?

it just happens

You will notice the female get hugely pregnant and whack her in a breeding tank

I had tropical fish for about 10 years until recently, the tank had to go

Guppies breed like rabbits

Neon Tetras are always a good adition

Zebra Dominos are good as well

I had an Algae eater for about 4 years and it cleaned the tank alot with a Corydourous

I also had a Red Tailed Black Shark in the tank which was about 10-15cm long but wasnt aggressive, that lived about 4 years as well

My first 2 fish were Superted and Spotty, thats how long i have had them

Love Fish... I have a small community tank in my bedroom with a pair of Dwarf Guramis, 4 different Butterfly Ciclids (Rams), a big fat catfish (called George), couple of Corys, erm a butterfly Goby and a few other little fish. Its a well planted tank with ancient ruin style things in it. Will try post pictures.

My boyf has a gorgeous tank full of different types of ciclids, his set up is mainly rocks to imitate there natural habitat. He is very much a fish person knows pretty much everythin bout all fish! (is this a geeky thing?! just kiddin!) smileys/smiley4.gif

Mum n dad have a cold tank and tropical tank downstairs too!

barrett
17th November 2005, 17:48
cool, fish rock, there are some really cool fish in the shop now. They
opened up a new section downstairs, its ace, loads more tropical fish.
Just makes it harder to choose though!! I saw some really cool ones can't
remember the name. They where black with like neon flames on them!!
They rocked!

barrett
17th November 2005, 23:33
I went and got me some, but i can't remember the name of them!! I will
have to go tomorrow (yet again! on first name terms with the owner of
the place now!!) and look at the name of them!!\

Anyway they are little tiddlers. I bought 6 of them. They are silver with
orange tails, they where orange all over in the shop with a silver belly, but
lost their colour for some reason smileys/smiley13.gif Might be as we dont yet have an
aquarium light?

I used to have tropical fish too; guppys (they never stopped breeding!), neon tetras, plattys, mollys and a few others I can't remember. Was great to get in from work and de-stress watching them.

I no longer use it, but I still have a 120 litre tank on it's own stand (with storage), and an inbuilt light, filter, pump and heater. Cost me well over £250 new, I might post a for-sale thread if anyone is interested...

EDIT: 90 litre, oops... kinda like this

LOL - yeah right! I wouldn't expect much for it, but more than zero! Time to register with eBay I think...

Fish are great, although they do need more time and attention than you would think.

barrett
18th November 2005, 20:12
How much would you be looking at selling it for? Let me know, might be
interested for a second tank for some other fish that are non community
