on diesels. the glow plugs help start it. (notice you gotta wait for a light to go off before you start aka: preheat i call it) i'm not gonna go techy on diesels.

Is the car you are using a petrol or a diesal?
What colour smoke is coming from the exhaust?

If it's blue coloured smoke it's general bad news. If it's just a bit of white smoke from start-up in the morning when the engine is still cold, this is normal really. Just unburnt diesel fumes. If it's thick black smoke and there's shit loads of it, then your turbo's most likely blown- but i don't think it has got one anyway.
Sometimes when i flaw it past 3000 revs in my car it kicks out some white smoke. Part and Parcel of owning a 10 year old diesel really.

Have you got a decat pipe, or the original catalytic converter fitted?

if its a diesel it sounds like its struggling to cold start as diesel relies on heat and compression to ignite the fule instead of a spark
check the glowplugs and make sure they're not burned out
