View Full Version : Detailing Karl's 106 GTi - OEM+ Detailing

Right some of you may have seen the pictures which I posted in Karl's thread about detailing his lovely car. Well I'd thought I'd do a write up as it's always interesting to see before and after pics and results of certain products etc.

I've started up my own small detailing business on the side whilst I've nearly finished uni and got abit of free time on my hands. I seriously love detailing cars and is a real passion of mine and not in it for the bucks like many people, simply to cover my costs and enjoy it.

Karl seemed really happy with the job, I know I was. It came out really well and was awesome to work on a new paint job for a change. The mirror finish I was able to achieve looked soooo good! It took a good 4 hours+ and tbh I could have spent another 2 hours on it but time was running short. The paintwork itself didn't really need a Machine Polish as it's in a good state generally, the only areas which need attention in the future is the roof and rear quarter panels which could do with some extra attention. I was even able to remove some scratches, scuffs and blimishes using a good quality paint cleaner, polish and glaze by hand which is always a winner.

Anyway here are the pictures, forgot to take pictures of the products but here's a selection ~

After a rinse and wipeout I started on the cleaning ... I assessed the paint at this point and decided with it being a fresh spray on 1000 miles it didn't need to be clay barred.
Standard Two bucket method with grit guards, Lambswool mitts and Meg's Gold Class.

Detailing brush for those hard to reach places and a little bit of Meg's Super Degreaser to move the dirt.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/fergie127/OEM%20Detailing/IMG_3131better.jpg

After cleaning and drying (Meg's Water Magnets and Terry Towls) it was clean Karl had a few buff scratches and imperfections. Decided not to machine polish and would attempt to remove by hand. I used Meg's #83 with #80 and a more abrasive polish compound.

Next I applied Meg's #80 to the entire car ...

And taking off ...

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/fergie127/OEM%20Detailing/IMG_3144Better.jpg

At this point time was starting to run out ... I wanted to give the whole car a coat of Chemcial Guys Wet Mirror Finish ... I only had time to give the bonnet a once over and finished with Meg's Final Touch. Results ~

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/fergie127/OEM%20Detailing/IMG_3143.jpg

I tackled the wheels with Meg's Wheel Brightener ... Being in almost new condition it wasn't very difficult and they came out well. Meg's High Gloss Tyre Shine added ~

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j163/fergie127/OEM%20Detailing/IMG_3150.jpg

Windows cleaned with Rain-X + Meg's Window Cleaner and the car wiped down with Meg's Final Touch. Exhaust Polished with Meg's Metal Polish. The old tar spot treated with AG Tar remove. Plastics treated with AG Plastic Cleaner.

whats the going rate then ferg....

Totally depends on the state of the paintwork ... i.e

Does it need to be clay barred?
Does it need to be machine polished?
How pad are the swirls?
Thus what pads are needed?
Thus how much time it will take etc etc blah blah ...

But £40 as a minimum for wash, paint treatment, gloss and sealents, any scratch and imperfections removed.

It will be more for the whole thing to be machine polished. But not astronomical ... As I said I'm not in it for big $$$'s ...

40 is what i charge out at ferg. unless its a range rover its 80 lol!

I am currently doing my mrs JCW and it needed to be machined cause its lived it life being cleaned by side of the roaders or car washes so you can imagine!

Top work though. really does shine well worth every penny

£40 is a fair charge for a very good clean and paint treatment ...

Idea being that if someone wants their car done for £40 it won't break the bank and they can see how good their car can look with the right products and someone that knows what they are doing etc.

Once they have seen the car in a good condition they can pay me to come back and give it a bloody good once over with a Machine Polish.

But yeah ... I'd charge more for a something like a Range Rover + 4x4 etc.

With an 1973 Porsche and 2006 Mini S to do within the next few weeks that should help getting my name and quality of detail around.

Karl
10th April 2009, 13:54
Ferg, just before FCS ill have to have you give it a once over and rock something on my car to say it was cleaned by you!

Ferg
10th April 2009, 13:58
Yeah if that's ok Karl?

Next time I want to give your roof and quarter panels a once over with Meg's #80. That seems to be the only bits with some mild swirling ... I'll be able to get rid of most of that no problem. Paint would have hardened in say 2 months time as well.

Mike-VTR

On a serious note,
perhaps Ferg or someone else can advise me,
Cars not been driven since ferg did this...

Now,
it's been rained on and there are loads of dirt patches where the rain has dried on the car.

What is the best way to get all this crap off?

Ferg
11th April 2009, 19:40
You've got to clean it again Karl ... Don't just wipe it off. You'll scratch the paint.

Karl
11th April 2009, 19:50
Are you joking!?
it hasnt even been anywhere! :(

dannygti
11th April 2009, 20:04
Are you joking!?
it hasnt even been anywhere! :(

you need to get yourself a karcher with a snow foam attachment, it will save loads of hassle and will take half the time to wash whilst keeping good results.

matt_vtr_15
11th April 2009, 20:07
good job there ferg!!!

and nice looking car there karl!!!

gutted about the dirt patches!!!

that always happens to me to!!

As ferg has gave it such a good clean it shouldn't take long to sort out...

personally i would give it a good blast with a pressure washer and leather it down...

all the hard work ferg did should still show :)

12th April 2009, 00:35
I used Meg's #83 with #80 and a more abrasive polish compound.

why didnt you use machine?
and what you mean a more abrasive compound?

megs on machine would have been all you needed, i wouldnt have even bothered with 83.

and it would have took 4 hours to speed glaze it on machine, so i dont know how you did so much by hand.

im not moaning btw

Ferg
12th April 2009, 18:45
I didn't use a machine polish because the paint is still relatively new and seemed reasonably thin. Even with a polishing pad I wasn't sure on how it would hold upto a machine polish session tbh.

I was happy after inspecting the paint after washing that I could get the results I was after without the use of a machine polish ... Obv not all paints are like this and with it being new, that was a big factor.
