27th April 2009, 18:08
Read in the daily star... (so take it with a pinch of salt) but they said some dr said worst case is it could kill around 120million people and on the other end of the scale the flu could just die and go away. USA is in a national state of alert over though apprently!

If you read up on it you'll realise it's all media scaremongering.
Just over 100 people in mexico have died from a flu like virus, 20 of those have been confirmed to be Swine Flu. These 20 people also live in very small communties where personal hygiene is non existent and other viruses were likely to contribute to their deaths.
In contrast with people who have had confirmed Swine Flu cases in the USA, no one has even come close to dieing.

Almost all of it will be scaremongering, the reason? American drug companies will be making an absolute fucking killing off this!
People here are already avoiding buying pork, which is pathetic, as cooking pork kills the virus, and our pork isn't even infected!!

I mean there's not been too much info on the people that died of it, apprently only 20 of them definatly had swine flu, and of those 20 people it hasn't been explained what if any medical attention and treatment they had up until the end

Thing is though there hasnt been an outbreak like this for 50 years. Medicine and general knowledge has moved on since then. Were better prepared and as said already have enough vacination for millions. Said on the news last night were even better prepared than america.

Aye, i'm not disputing that it could end up being a bad bad thing, but the general public start goin mad over this shit causing more harm than good, i mean how many doctors/hospitals will have a huge influx of people with colds/flu taking up valuable spaces that will result in genuinly ill people getting worse/dying due to not being ablle to get seen

coming back from birmingham last night i was sat on the train during rush hour.
The woman in front began to have a rant about thomas cook and how they've cancelled her holiday, I hadn't really started listening till she brought up "that it's all because of swine flu!"
Apparently she didnt want to go on holiday anywhere else than Mexico city and the offer of jamaica was pathetic from thomas cook, she was demanding that she still could travel or she'd take her custom elsewhere.

-Dan-
29th April 2009, 17:06
Just the same as normal flu, it's barely catchable. THe only realistic ways to catch are standing right next to someone with it, when they sneeze or cough right in your face (like 2 inches away) or by bad hygiene (not washing hands before eating, sucking your thumb etc), and swapping bodily fluids (eg kissing, sex etc) with someone who has it.
It certainly isn't impossible to inhale airborne germs that are 'floating' around in the air, but you'd have to be pretty fucking unlucky.
The reason mexico is so bad is probably because their mummy's never taught them to wash their handies before din-din.

Has been said if people washed their hands properly and when they should MRSA would have pretty much died out in hospitals so alot of bad hygiene everywhere tbh (based on an old specialist doctor i once saw on how clean is your house hospital special ages ago)

Only good thing ive heard so far is that we are on level 4 alert out of 6
If it gets to level 5 sixth form closes!! Bring on swine flu!
Level 4 il guess and say read the papers and create forum topics about it.
Level 5 is like recommended to stay indoors.
Level 6 is dig underground and become goblins

The amount of people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet is pathetic! Numerous times I've wound my mates up telling them they couldnt come near me/sit in my car till they'd done so :p
Maybe this will make them wise up :err:
Completely agree, this happens a lot at our Uni toilets, lads come in for a quick slash and they're off again like that, no soap or water, no handwash. I find it horrible.
Basic hygiene is the first key step to combatting half of these health issues.

It doesnt mean be cautious at all. It means a sudden rise in the number of incidences(above the expected rate) within a region,or global in this case.

Pandemic comes from the word pandemonium. Which has a definition of:
pandemonium |ˌpandəˈmōnēəm|
noun
wild and noisy disorder or confusion; uproar : pandemonium broke out.
Nah I'm joking they are probably unrelated.
On a more serious note a kid who lives literally 2 miles from my house has it. And I'm a part time cleaner at a primary school and it's like being a secret agent now. Getting briefed every two minutes on emergency pandemic procedures.. Which only seem to consist of disinfect EVERYTHING.
Who said pigs can't fly? I heard a pig flu in Mexico :homme:

granted that is the technical lingo but tbh most people think it means everyone is screwed resulting in panic where as you just have to be cautious and just take the steps that are advised to try and stop/slow the spread of infection

It pisses me off that some people actually believe this shite lol.
+1.
It's a load of bollocks. I've said all along, I won't believe it until masses of people start dying. It's just more scaremongering from the media. Someone actually said to me today "The government isn't making it out to be as bad as it really is. They are really worried but don't want to cause mass panic" :wall:
Millions of people die from easily treatable diseases in third world countries every day. All this Swine flu shit is doing is highlighting how immoral we really are.. :)

Exactly its scare tactics, its worrying how easy it is for Governments to control masses of stupid people through the media. Like with bird flu, the factory that was on TV when the 'epidemic really took hold of the country' had exactly the same strain of birdflu 6 years before. No one gave a fuck because it isnt a threat :wall:.

It's taking people's minds off of the economy which is what I'm sure was intended. Although I would feel bad if it was true after all this :homme:

If it stops me going to Cuba in October I'll be reasonably pissed off.
I'm unsure what to think of it, sure - the media are hyping it up a wee bit but for the World Health Organization to say "a pandemic is immenent" must mean something.

They're worried about the rate that the virus has already mutated and the damage that'll be done if it mutates even more. The standard young, old and infirm will be succeptible (as usual) but also thoses in their 20's-30's. Having the flu jab may give you some antiviral protection but not much.
xx
The guy that caught it was at a concert...

swine flu is shiit, the media have hyped it like people with hoodies are going to stab, rape and rob you! aha. but something like 12 people have swine flu atm and theres about 70 million people in the uk atm, also the media said 750,000 are going to die from it when really its about 40,000 and normal flu kills about 20,000 anyway so its not that big a deal. Don't read shitty newspapers like the sun! haa
