Im currently looking to upgrade my motor to something bigger and more suitable for the family.

Ive been looking at the passat estate or saloon, have noticed the ones in my price range are all fairly high mileage though, between 120k and 150k.

I know they are well built but how high should i go mileage wise?? Are there any common faults to look out for on these vehicles?

Cheers tom

It is a poor mans audi your right lol. The mondeo was another choice, but i like the look of the passat. Ive only really got 2k to spend but may save up a tad longer.

As long as its been serviced regualy i cant see a problem mate. Make sure they got reciepts for everything, and take it on a good test drive, listen for knocks from the front when turning which could be as little as a worn bush, also any whines from the gearbox when pulling away. But for german enginering there built solid and should have some good life left in them, if you take care of it aswell. I was looking at getting one as a daily on coilovers and split rims :)

passats are nice, I have considered one myself.
Personaly high milage on a german car wouldnt put me off, we all know VW are sterdy and built well.
I wouldnt go over 1k in milage though, thats just my opinion.

as someone said look for FSH, regular servicing.

Im driving a Mercedes at 115k and its running like new.

It all depends on the owners tbh.

Dude... DO NOT GO VW!!!

REASON:

My dad bought a brand new VW Passet, TDI SPORT, 130BHP 02 car back in 2002. Its litterly the dogs bolcoks. Surounded by air bags, inc a 'roll cage', lowered, rain sensor wipers, leather seats, the lot. back in its day was the dogs bolocks. Now most cars come with that standar . Its the 2nd car his owned form new, rest buying second hand.

At first the service light kept comming on ever few hundread miles, interiour started squeaking, far more then my saxo dose supprisingly. recently, the protective cover under the car fell off and flapped about down the M40 a few months back, hanging on buy 1 clip. That cost £150 to replace (Would had cost double but luckly we're good friends with a VW macanic).

The alternator has broke, broke belt and thus making the bearings inside the alternator smash the engine protective shield to bits, and dent the insdie of the engine bay.

All the springs have been replaced as the car sat to one said slightly.

Wheel bearing has actually SHATTERED at 4am coming back from Gatwick down the motorway. The car's wheel fell off outside our house (luckly) and was stuck. (I ACTUALLY AM NOT EXAGERATING O LIEING)

Head lights are SHOCKING. They are like driving on diped.

PAS belt gone

PAS pump replaced several times

Radio (That came with the car) hasdn't worked properally since day 1. Poor reception and even on Vol. 1 it semed as if it was on #10.

Its done only just over 60K. It gets used maybe 3 times aweek, one for shopping and the others to go to football. So its not ran around town for excessive wear and tear.

Other then that, i feel VERY safe in it, and the ride quality is comfort.

Save your money, get a ford, there equally as good.

Dad says for the money he paid, he would rather save £10,000-15,000 and got a ford with the same problems (If any tbh)

Anythig but VW.

I herd Skoda's are as good quality as Audi's etc. plus a saving for a few grand.

There popular now, and some look good.

Sorry i was going to ignore this but.. your dad must of got a bad Passat, so not all VW's can be bad? Skodas have improved other the last few years imo.

I quite like the octavia, its a nice looking car, it was on the list of maybes. Just trying to get a rough idea of what they are all like and working out which is best suited and is going to be good for few years use.

Im still very strong toward the passat, its practical and its german, there good looking motors aswell and all id do to it is lower it a little and put the rs6 alloys on, or some other nice alloys.
