was thinking of getting a pioneer but some friends told me they weren't reliable,

alipne is a good brand, but pioneer isn't far behind.
alpine seems to be more expensive than pioneer, and not loved because of it's constant look (one big "screw" with few shining buttons) and because of all that reasons people more often buy pioneer.
clarion is also very good, but also expensive
VDO seems to give the best sound for "normal" prices, but also expensive and too many shining lights. pretty rare in people's cars
