engine number & transplant

At the moment i curently have a 1.4 and a fair few things have gone wrong. i was looking about for a new engine and it seems only the 1.4's have engine codes. how do i find out mine if i want to put another one in.

I was also thinking about getting a vts insted. would any vts engine fit. i have a mk1 dont know if it makes a differance. and sorry to keep going on and asking lots of questions im just not used to this type of car.
if i did fit a vts one could i keep the 1.4 gearbox for quick gearing?

not sure about the coding but you would need to change the mounting brackets for the engine, i think you can use a 1.4 g.box in a VTR, not 100% about VTS but it wont go anywhere after a tonne

mayeb the VTR would be easier as they're the same engine effectively (I think).
