Well, if the limit is 30mph and you are doing 31mph technically you are breaking the law.
However, I imagine they wouldn't give you a ticket to 34mph or over?
lisa-vtr
16th May 2009, 14:09
only a few at the most or there'd be no point in having a speed limit.
Besides, you shouldnt speed anyway... if you wanna drive fast, get on the track
ne_jam
16th May 2009, 14:11
0 mph over the limit to be honest other wise they wouldnt state a set speed limit, but most cases will give you some leway
Rob-6
16th May 2009, 14:11
is it not 10% ??
Stickyjam
16th May 2009, 14:12
it is possible to be done simple for breaking the law.. but it depends how they catch you with guns they usually allow for 10% incase you try and play the " its not accurate" crap..
Robin91
16th May 2009, 14:26
The fact is, the speed limit is the speed LIMIT. Yes, sometimes they may allow you 10% or so if they catch you to let you off, but you're still over the limit if you do even 31MPH, and technically they could still do you for this (however it's unlikely, but that's not the point.)
That 10% is there for your own misjudgment and that of the cameras, not to be used all the time.

on one of the cop shows i saw a while ago they were in the camera van on a 40mph road, they only did people going 48mph+
but most coppers would do you for less then that

vtr_chris90
16th May 2009, 14:45
they do allow a small percentage on the speed limit though
because obviously everyones speedos will vary and give slightly different readings, but still its only like 3 or 4mph over at very very most i think
CurtSD
16th May 2009, 14:51
I thought the 10% was only for cameras.
Depends on the copper. If your doing 35 on a 30 limit during the day when its busy will be different to doing the same on a empty road at night.
Rob-6
16th May 2009, 14:55

yeh i think its 10%. lucky thing happened the other day, was driving back home about 1am, it was raining, and i was going through a section of 30mph limit road. was minding my own business and then i see blue lights behind, so pull over and the copper says, weve been following you a little while and you got up to 46mph in this 30mph stretch. (and yes coudlnt see shit behind me as it was raining and dark) i just played dumb and apologised but i did think fuck here comes 3 points and a fine. then he comes out with "just keep an eye out in your mirrors for us son, you never know where we might be or when we might appear" gave a chuckle then just walked back to his car! bit of a result!

16th May 2009, 15:36
speed cameras are 10% + 2mph
30 + 10% + 2 = 35mph
40 + 10% + 2 = 46mph
and so on, they have to account for your speedo and their equipment being out
normal police cars are allowed to go 15mph over the speed limit when blue lighting, no speed limit for traffic cars when blue lighting obviously because they can chase
normal police cars arent allow to pursue over the 15mph limit either

Wrong and wrong.
It all depends on where you are and what force cover the area. TVP (Thames Vally Police) are shit hot on it. Not even 1 MPH over or your done. Where as in the next county which is Northants you can get away with murder before they do anything.

im guessing you have never been through a speed camera at 32 mph in a 30...
dd you notice that camera didnt flash. its because your clocks arent calibrated spot on.
AND the cameras work on the 10%+2 rule. because lets face it. everyone has been day dreaming driving along and you have seen the lines start slammed your brakes on and hoped for the best. and if your denying it your a liar!

He didn't mention anything about being at 31mph on your speedo and you'd get pulled by TVPD (sound American haha) he said if you are doing 31mph in a 30 limit zone they'd pull you. If you are doing 31mph in a 30mph zone, you are breaking the law - that is a FACT.

maybe true, but it still doesn't mean your allowed to be going any faster than the speed limit says anyway.
we all know camera and speedo inaccuracies mean you an get away with going 35 in a 30 quite often, your still not allowed because its not legal.
don't confuse whats legal with what you can get away with.

If i'm honest, Why does anybody need to know what the 10% law is, basically, if your 1mph over the limit, your SPEEDING and you deserve anything you get for it... My mate Ive lost 3 good mates these last 4 years after being run over by speeding drivers. I hope you all get caught
its legal to do 30mph in a 30mph zone, even if your speedo says your doing 35mph
Depends on the road/conditions/mood of copper/mood of speed camera :P. Etc
On any road other than a motorway the unwritten rule is 10% of the limit plus 2 miles per hour. On a motorway the unwritten rule is 85mph.
Do pay attention to "unwritten rule" If a copper wanted to he could do you for speeding by 1mph. Simple as.

Why does anybody need to know, your breaking the law, whats a Unwritten rule - basically a rule which a copper doesnt need to listen to. 1mph over is illigal, why not just follow the one rule that counts. DONT FUCKING SPEED I'm no copper or government worker or a campainer, save speeding for the track not the road.. argh it winds me

technically 33mph would be legal since your speedos 10% down, regardless though, 30mph is guna hurt if u get hit and sos 40mph, the difference is very slight and tbh, if someone hit me at 37 in a 30, how would you know?
and i dont believe the majority of these "speed haters" stick to 30 in a 30 zone, tbh most people stick the the higher ones like 60 and 70

You can be done for 1mph over. Technically I guess you get 0.499999mph as they round to the nearest 1mph.
Car speedos have to be read 0% under or 10% over for type approval. In practice most cameras will give you some leeway. Most motorway police won't take an interest under 90mph. Have heard a couple of cases of people being done for 31mph in a 30.

i was watching traffic cops or sumin like that the other week and in south yorkshire your allowed 10% ontop of the speed limit + another 4mph, so in a 30mph you would get away with up to 37mph....thats with the laser speed gun things.

yer there inaccurate, they could never make the points and fine stick because if the sensor said 31 they would have to prove it to be 100% accurate 100% of the time and they cant so all this crap about doing you at 31 is rubbish, yes 31 is illegal but you wont get points and a fine
if the gun hits you doing 37, chances are your really doing more like 33-34 so they have you speeding, not at 37, but for the sake of keeping it simple, they have you speeding 100% sure
