Tappetts or something very loud

hey guys

cracking website! got a 2001 VTR, everything sound on it apart from a very annoying ticking noise coming from where the carboretta is?

is this my tappetts ? what else could it be and will i be able to sort it myself ?

So how do i tell what this tapping noise is ?

is it the tappets or not ?

I'd check the oil level first, if its low, top it up. This may help a little.


But yeah, its likely to be tappets.

Does it go, tap tap tap tap tap?

could be a loose sparkplug this can cause major tappyness !

You do get a "popping" noise from the coil pack area - that's the injectors. If it sounds pretty clicky then you want a garage to adjust the tappets for you.

Is that expensive having the tappets altered so its quieter ?

And roughly how long does it take ?

could i not do it myself ?

I had same problem few weeks back. Like a 5 minute job mate really, but need to know what your doing before you go trying it yourself :y:

ive got a basic knowledge of whats under the rocker box etc

reckon i could do it with a haynes manual ?

by all means flick through a hayes manual but if you dont know whats what then i wouldnt reccomend doing it its not a hard job if you know how everthing works. tbh prob shud do mine but ive just done my headgasket and forgot i wanted to check them so cant be arsed now.
