x2

the fact it weighs 920kgs standard means a good power to weight ratio

makes it a lot of fun to chuck around on track.

parts are cheap, most things are easy to do yourself so you learn about the workings of a car

Modifying is quite cheap compared to other cars

What are the basics to looking after a Saxo, for non mechanically minded people? :( I wanna take great care of my car, and have a lot of free time but I literally don't know where to start or what to do :( Want to learn!

Predator_R32
19th May 2009, 00:24
Well keep an eye on oil levels etc, service it every 10k its an easy job which a person who isnt mechanically minded can do

keep it clean to stop rust occurring (rust is going to happen) but keeping arches clean especially will stop road salt eating into things

other than that have the windows down once a week and radio off to listen out for any clunking etc etc and last of all dont rag the thing all over especially when cold

Cheers mate, think I should pick up a Haynes manual. I noticed something worrying tonight out with my gf, trying to demist back window (:p) I pressed the button and i saw tiny sparks like sparkling in the bottom corner of it! I read somewhere about the heating mechanism shattering the glass so just turned it straight off. Should I be worried?

Predator_R32
19th May 2009, 00:31
Yeah will most likely be the heater element in window, check the two connectors on either side of the window they sometimes dislodge and can short it out, it should blow the fuse though

Amen, if you take care of it, it'll be fine, obviously you'll have problems from time to time, but as far as im concerned, that's something that you have to put up with from a 6-13 year old car.

check oil/water levels weekly

keep it clean - arches, engine bay etc

listen for knocks/whines and investigate them

if you have it in the air for any reason prod around and have a good look underneath

Don't wait until you have a service for them to tell you you need a new parts, you should ideally know how much life is left in brakes, tyres etc

keep it serviced regularly

in the first 10 minutes from you starting the engine be very gentle with it.

don't be harsh with everything when driving - progressive braking acceleration, read road ahead so you know when you will be slowing down and do it gradually.

obviously you can give it a good thrash now and then but if your everyday commute involves tailgating, hard braking etc then parts won't last.

Cheers mate, how do I clean the arches is it as simple as taking wheel off then whacking a jet on them? :y:

VTR_Craig

pretty much.

maybe cover hubs/discs/calipers with a bag.

give them a quick scrub with a brush

i gave them a quick wash then gave them a coat of underseal to protect them

I appreciate this mate :clapping: I always see in progress threads people "Hammeriting" various things under the car, is this the same stuff for arches? Sorry I am total amateur at these things :(

VTR_Craig
19th May 2009, 22:30
Yep, hammerrite or underseal

I've done my arches and removed spare wheel and done all underneath.

Adge

Literally just paint the bastard with a brush? :D Is there an engine bay cleaning guide, or just use water and elbow grease? And finally to paint calipers... How do you remove them? Sorry to ask all these things mate must be sick of it haha.

VTR_Craig
19th May 2009, 22:40
no worries mate, you dont know unless you ask.

Yep, literally just cleaned the arches then painted with a brush, nobody will see the arches or underneath so it doesn't matter about the finish.

engine bay you have to be very carefull not to get water in certain places

i usually use some all purpose cleaner (asda 34p diluted) and spray it on places then wipe off or use a clean paint brush to get into places.

don't use a pressure washer or hose pipe.

i didn't remove the calipers to paint them, just clean them, wire brush them then a few layers of paint.

if you turn the steering wheel you will be able to get round the back of them.

I think the Un-Reliability of French cars is a bit over the top.

My dad owned a 205 GTI with no problems, neither have I had any problems in 12 months of owning my Megane.

Its down to the driver and its past. If its been ragged all its life then its more likely to have problems. The megane was completely standard when I bought it, few owners, a bit of service history and and Ive had no problems.

My tip would be to try get an un-molesterd VTS rather than one thats already been modded. Thus more likely to have not been ragged by some chav.

Barry123
9th April 2010, 14:28
problem is, as the car's get cheaper they're falling into the hands of people that are retarded and/or cheapskates who won't tackle problems or seek out minor issues... then they're the first to complain about reliability when the minor, relatively unexpensive issue turns into a major megabucks issue.

2.0L Redtop ;)

2.0l redtop Turbo - drive really fast in a straight line screeching then get to a bend and die. not good handling unless you do some decent mods to accomodate the extra power and thats alot of EXTRA power over a standard corsa b chassis and shell ;)
