When you say nuts, do you mean bolts? You don't spray the thread, only the head of the bolt.

wont they chip as soon as you try tighten them up?. look on ebay and they do caps to cover the bolts, they would be fine to spray

Spray a few layers on and let it dry between coats. Cheaper to just spray it and caps could be nicked or come off and look tacky.
