Hi,

Bought my 52reg saxo 1.1i desire recently and as i am new to driving and haven't driven an older car before don't know if it is a problem or not. When putting it in to reverse its a bugger sometimes it doesn't actually go in and just makes a loud noise when lifting up clutch also i have noticed recentally that its getting tough to get in 1st gear and the other day when i put it into second it made a loud noise guessing because i didn't push the clutch down further enough also when changing from 2nd to 3rd it kind of doesn't smoothly changes gear. I am guessing this could be that the clutch needs adjusting and hoping that its not the actually clutch that needs replacing :-( any advice would be greatfully appreciated

cheers Nick

Hi,

It could be that your gear linkage rods need to be changed. These linkages wear making selecting gear difficult.

Here is an example of the rods: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250428222177&ssPageName=MERCOSI_VI_ROSI_PR4_PCN_BIX_Stores&refitem=250401324865&itemcount=4&refwidgetloc=closed_view_item&refwidgettype=osi_widget&_trksid=p284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%252BC%252BP%252BS%2 52BIA%26itu%3DFICS%252BUFI%252BIEW%252BUA%252BIA%2 52BUCI%26otn%3D4%26ps%3D10

Try finding these rods that connect from the gear stick to the gearbox and see if there is any play in the joints. You may feel alot of play in the gear stick also.

Cheers

that makes a lot of sense for the reason why its getting difficult to putting in gear as if you just tap the gear stick theres about 2cm's of play. Don't suppose you know how much it would cost at a garage to do.

Hi, Its a 2 spanner job in Haynes, meaning "Fairly easy, suitable for beginner with some experience". I have no idea what a garage would charge, but I would guess an hour's worth of labour would cover it.

saxos are allways a bastard to get into reverse, tbh, theres a nack to it and about the other bit prob gear linkages, which are piss easy to change :)

haha i know its probably an easy job but i know i would just fuck it up some how especially when it comes to a car just don't want to risk it i think i might ring garage up and ask them to quote a price for gear linkages and adjusting clutch how much do they normally charge per hour labour

cheers
