Why not buy a GTI in the first place?
Why do people buy a rare car, throw away the rare bits and make it common.
The 1.3 litre 8 valve lump in the Rallye is pure joy. Rev's like a nutter to 100BHP because of the motorsport spec head. The 16valve lump is just a big heavy weight in the front
If you're panning to mod it in anyway then buy a fucking XSI

Haven't got a clue, I could only remember it being a rallye, read through it one day when I was bored and remembered the camo on the roof. Looks like he's got rid of that now but looks good anyway.

16v it. Leave drums on, the discs aren't particularly worth changing to, stick some 266mm brakes on the front, strip it, buckets, cage, set of bodies, cams, enjoy.

Buy one, restore it to showroom condition, then dry store it. It will be worth a small fortune in a few years

a gti leather interior and a pugsport exhaust (i think)

Leave a rare car alone. XSi or XS mod the fuck out of it!

You've got to consider why most people go 16v though. The 1.3 engines are at least 13 year old, they're getting big miles and quite a few are failing. And for the cost, it's just a more sensible option to go 16v. All people that do it before anything happens are doing is avoiding the failures that aren't far away..

rallyes should be kept standard, looked after and restored. they are an awesome car with a great engine, why ruin a great package?

dont see the point in putting a 16v in a lighweight car, might aswell just buy a gti in the 1st place, btw what insurance groups are the rallye's?

i agree with leaving a rallye alone, such an awesome car dont ruin it. standard and showroom condition is the way to have it.
get a gti and mod it or an xsi and 16v it if you want a 16v engine.

+1 to all the people saying to leave the 1.3 in and restore it to standard.
I'm actually on the look out for one of these too atm.
