A hot hatch in it's purest term is a FWD car with a punchy fuel injected engine and the same practicality as the cooking model. It also should be designed to be fun as opposed to outragiously fast and should be affordable to own. Can't think of anything better than the 205 GTI tbh

Close between MK1 Golf GTI and the 1.9 205 GTI, think the 205 edges it on reflection thou.

My mate used to have one back in day; it fucking rocked!

The hot hatch to me is symbolized by 2 cars;
MK1 Golf GTI and the Honda Civic EF9 SiR.

Reasons being they are both fun, small and actually put a smile on your face when driving them.

First one that springs to mind for me....205 gti. It has to be fwd, small, light & nimble, fast but not rediculously quick, good handling, sporty looking, and have its own little 'querks'

205 gti, the original french hot hatch for me. Small, light, fwd, revvy, fun to chuck and easy to own/work on and maintain. :)

you see most of you people probably never even knew of the ef9, quite possibly one of the most overlooked hot hatches of the past 20 years. This car is regarded by purists as the first Type-R as it was the first Honda to have the R in the name.

r5 gtt or a mk2 fiesta xr2. Both, small, fun and a little fragile.

Ive got a softspot for the xr2's as i had one years ago. All the arches, spots and spoilers made it std out against the povery spec models.

Glad manufacturers, are making the 'hot' models look different from the rest of the line up. There were some coming out a few years ago, which didnt look much diff from the base spec models.

Thing that made me smile most about the xr2 was the stopclock function on the int. clock. Now if that doesnt encourage bad behaviour, i dont know what does!! Manys the time i would try and beat the clock, with my cherry bomb giving it large. Ooo to be 17 again. LOL!!!!

hate to agree with Jeremy Clarkson on this one but the 205 GTi does it for me.

VW invented the hot hatch, but pug refined it & brought it to the masses IMO
