View Full Version : Who's Declaring?

Hi.
Basicly im just baffled how i see new threads getting made everday about 17 year olds with saxo's who lower etc... yet they never seem to mention the fact their insurance goes up a whole load. Most seem to be on a tight budget...
I am only 17... and been passed for about 3 months.
Im paying direct line 2k for my 51 furio. I phoned them up to ask about mods, and they said they wouldnt even look at me till i was 25... I then started looking around and the cheapest i got was £3100 from quinn direct with just the suspenion on...
Now i know not declaring is risky... the way i see it is that if you dont declare... you might aswell not have insurance...
Im basicly asking how the other load of people in the same boat as me are getting cheap quotes / not paying much more for mods.
Hope someone can shed some light...
P.S - I am 18 in september and with that i tried some quotes and the cheapest i got was quinn @ £2600 with exaust and suspension declared...
Any one want to explain :D

saying nothing = void insurance claim(if you have to make one)
Telling them=loads of money you carnt afford.

Surely eve if you get stopped by the police they can void your insurance there and then.

not really, they see you have insurance thats it.... its when your in a ccrash

When the police stop you they wont know exactly what mods you have declared unless they actually make contact with your insurance
BUT
There will be a marker on the car to say if it is modified if it is when they do general checks. So if it is modified in any way but there is no marker its squeaky bum time

Hmm...
So paying like £2600 is about the best im going to get declaring?

not really, they see you have insurance thats it.... its when your in a ccrash
There is a marker to show if a car is modified but that is the limit unless directly calling insurance company

Remember not everyone know if a car has been modified......if you get grief for it say u dont know what a mod is. ;)

well quinn said they dont mind if it doesnt affect performance... so i could say that i didnt realise exaust and suspension really affected performance... infact makes it better handling...

Some people don't declare because they are covered third party and their car isn't worth much so even if the accident wasn't their fault they wont claim.

Tbf mate, telling people whether your cars' mods are declared or not online is a very silly idea. No comment haha.

Youve gotta declare tbh. You dont declare anything, then have a crash, and you insurance aint gonna pay out :(
And with prices like £2,600 whats the point in modifying? With the money used to buy a car, spend loads modifying and paying insurance you could get a virtually brand new car, but thats my opinion.

also if you dont dclare your isurence wont pay out for other people you crash into so ur in touble then, what ever the punishment is for no insurence is whatyou will recieve

Ffs. Insurance company wont allow me to mod for cheap.
Ill have to give adrian flux a ring... but i guess ill be waiting till im 18 till i start... such a let down direct line wont let me. I got told that they allowed things that wont affect performance...
Almost brought my 60mm springs etc aswell.

Should have gone for a 1.1 for first couple of years to ave for a VTS whilst building up your NCB.
I had the 1.0 before :homme: and ended up paying roughly the same on insurance even with one prang lol

Im sorry but pay anymore than £1500 on insurance and you're a fool (unless its a gash area ie London, Scouseland etc). My VTS didnt even cost what you are paying!

I'd just wait until your 18 and been driving a year. I could have insured a VTR for £1,300 fully comp, with mods with Bell, being 18 with 0NCB but 1 years driving experience.

my car just got siezed yest m8 got done for tints lowerd suspention and even advertising sax-p. cos its a form of advertising they said and voied my insurance
now got 6 points and £200 fine. all cos i never declared its just not worth the hassle m8 declare or get caught realy. i will be getting my car back tomoz but £175 siezure and recovery £25 a day storage, plus you have to get an insurance company to insure you to get it out of the compound and you gotta tell them its in a gouvernment compound,
and then its cost me like £600 deposit on insurance to get it out (p.s gna cancell it wen its out and then get money back). and then use a little 1.1 for 6months till i can afford to declare all mods done.

they was going to do me for other mods but the copper told me he has enough paper work to do with the mods. so far the only other 2 mods were sound system and exhaust he never noticed the pipercross filter. as a mod but to be honest now learnt my lesson big tyme when you get 6 points and a refusal of insurance on your record, thats enough to wake any 1 up i wont be getting a ban or retake my test luckly so im just glad with the fees plus £200 fine and will in future declare evrything down to the last nut n bolt thats colored. cos now with 6 points and a refusal on insurance for a standard vtr its £1350 with a £400 deposit and rest monthly wich i think is good. but will take mods off or buy a standard vtr.

The trouble is when you have mods you are considered a higher risk - if you have a performance exhaust, fast cam, performance air filter, turbo etc. fitted they consider you at higher risk of having an accident/the car being damaged as you're modifying it.
Even if you have none-performance mods; such as an amplifier and cd changer in your boot as well as extra speakers and a head unit; the insurance companies will see this as an excuse to extort more money from you in most cases...as your car is now at higher risk of being broken into for example. So you're being held by your short and curlies really at the mercy of the insurance companies.
In most cases, if your ICE was to get stolen, there would be some coverage by the insurance - however, most insurance policies do include a certain amount of cover for audio equipment, i.e. £500 and this will be detailed in the small print. Then the insurance company will send someone to look over your car and give you a certain payout after your excess is paid (i.e. £100) so you would get £400 back for your lost equipment and then a higher premium afterwards for making a claim in the first place that wasn't your fault.
So at the end of the day, there should be some cover although if you need more cover, you may need to make special arrangements with the insurance..for the peace of mind, it is worth declaring.
Hope this helps!
