Hi all,
What do you all think of Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8 TURBO 25th Anniversary Editions? Anyone been in one or driven one? im considering a GTI and im thinking this could be the one.. they are between 6-7k for a decent one quite pricey but insurance doesnt seem to bad and they seem like a very decent car, im planning on keeping whatever car i buy next/now for 3 or more years so im not to bothered spending 6 or 7 k...
Thanks,

Priced GTI to be honest, only difference is wheels, a few stick on body kits bits and the seats.
Diesel 150bhp is the one to have.
1.8 T isnt the best engine in the world, coilpacks and maf sensor problems.

Over priced and in no way a great car. Pay the extra for a Mk5 or go for something like the Renault 225

As above, you can pick up the Mk5 Gti for around the £8k mark these days and its a MUCH better car. £299 remap and 270bhp later its a bit of a beast.

why is the diesel 150hp one to go for? thats the TDI version 1.9? 30hp less than the 1.8 turbo? just from a general technical perspective in terms of reliability etc?
- Can you be a bit more specific about the "coilpacks and maf sensor problems"? where did you source that information?
Thanks,

possibly a 225 renault is that the megane your talking about? but then im stuck with another french toy thats going to depreciate in value quicker than a german or jap car plus the insurance is going to be high id imagine and fuel consumption..

Most reliable engine and more then likely wont loose that much money when you come to sell it, althought the petrol 180bph version is rather rare.
Join any VAG forum and you can see the list of problems they have with those engines.

kk, the megane 225 appear to look nice what is fuel economy like? but is reliablilty and build quality the usual french crap? also they seems to be over 8k at dealerships? and i need to buy mine from a garage because i need to px and i want warranty..

Garage prices will always be daft mate, only way you will get one for that price is to buy private.

PM Mark51 mate, he's just bought a 225, and got it for a very good price if i remember rightly.
Personal opinion is they look nice but theyre just a bit soggy. The cup is miles better but you'll struggle to get a cheap one.

I have an ibiza 1.8T and already in less than a month of owning had the packs go down and water pump which are both common problems, so hopefully see some of that german reliabilty now!

Don't be mislead by the comments on reliability. You could probably find a common fault with almost any car that's ever been built since time began. Overall, they're good motors.
As for the car, expensive for what it is and for the money you could definitely get something a lot quicker but you probably know that already.
I think it's a good looking car, 18inch wheels, lowered suspension, different seats and with only 2000 Uk cars built will hold it's value.
Very smart but worth the money? I'd have to say not.
My boss has one, infact he's thinking of getting rid as some dickheads kicked in loads of the panels and its put him off it (even though its getting fixed on insurance)
Its got really really nice interior, only problem i can remember him having was the battery melting the fuse box making the dash go mental. I think its more of a golf enthusiasts choice than for someone wanting a nice quick car as there expensive!.

The 1.8 20VT engine is actually really good. In the right spec the 180s with the K03S turbo can be tuned to give really good power on standard internals and the 225 variant with the K04 even more. There's gonna be common issues with any engine but this one happens to be worth the hassle.

Ibiza cupras are nice cars. I had a mk5 golf gt tdi2.0 and was fuking mint. Really good drive and quick and very comfy. Got back into my stripped vtr and felt so much slower lol and brakes felt awful.

They are really rare and hold their value well.. The interior is really nice.. I would go for the 180 bhp petrol, surely the diesels and petrols are just as hard to come by as they made an even amount of each!!??
The wheels are lush too, but can get laquering (sp) problems.

270bhp from a remap and the rest mate you dont get increases like that from a remap on a golf or any car for that matter

A stage 1 Revo will see nearly 60bhp gain on a MK5 car but yes, 270 is a bit optimistic without touching mechanicals.
Would also say, £8000 for a Mk5 Gti? It'll be a very high mileage car for that sort of money. £10,000 is more likely for a decent one.

Turbo Diesels see good gains with just remaps

on the tdi's its the torque increase thats mental, transforms the power delivery totally!
my mate got a remap on his 130 gt tdi, to 166bhp but got 320 lb ft of torque, which is just insane.
needless to say his gearbox bearings and DMF didnt last too long!!
