Hi all,

New to this site but i have had the two tone saxo vtr for a good few years (maybe even too long). Have enjoyed the car and intend to keep it for a while longer. On the whole ist seen me well but unfortunately the rear axle is now goosed. I had the trailing arm bearings changed once before and cost about £140 but was told by my mechanic that the arm wasn't in the best state so if it went again (which he was certain they would) that i would need a new axle. This is the route im taking but have a few questions......
Are mk1 and mk2 vtr axles the same?
Can a drum brake axle be easily retro-fitted with parts from my axle to take discs?
How much roughly for one from a scrapper?
How to tell if there is play in arms when its off car?i.e in scrap yard

Cheers in advance

Andy

Usual grab the wheel and see if it move when pushing and pulling at 9 o clock and 3 o clock.

Changing to disks if using a drum axle, well don't bother really, plenty of vtr axles kicking about and the vtr axles have thicker torsion bars. But if you did, think it's just a case of modding the hand brake cable and making up new lines to the drums.

Mk1 & mk2 axles are teh same, and vts axles will have the abs ring on em, not that it's the end of hte world if you used one though I don't think.

About 100-150 from a scrappers up here. No idea on where you are though.

Also when you had the bearings swapped out the first time, it had probably chewed the axle.

Hope that helps.

yeah that is great help thank you very much. i'm from the manchester area so plenty of scrap yards around here. ill have to get on to the phone tomorrow and try to source one locally. using the search facility i have read that its a fairly easy job to replace the rear axle so ill be doing it myself.
cheers again and hope this can be of use for others.

4 bolts mate, thats all. And obviously disconnect brake lines and hand break cables and refit to new one.
