i am needing to repalce my gearbox on my r plate vts i just been on the phone to my dads m8 who runs a transmision place that rebuilds the gearboxes but he said coz itl locked up i could be lookin at around £500 to recon my box , so i sed to him i seen em on ebay in scrappys etc for £150ish then he sed they will prob have a prob getting 1 to fit as there all got different radius arms and throws etc but everyone ive spoke to so far has said the vts boxes are all the same and 106 gtis are the same as it does any1 know if what hes saying is right i dont think hed try to mess me about but no1 i spoke to yet has said id have any problems? also the closest gearbox to me is over 100 miles away i know the vtr box will make me a little slower is it enough of a loss to make me have to travel over 100mile and to pay twice the money? thanks

all 106's/spaxos use the same MA box, its literally just the internals that are changed

he doesnt know what he's talking about, maybe he's talking in general about gearbooxes

look around for a vts/gti box they come up for sale fairly often

vtr engines do work and apparantly 1.1 gear boxs increase acceleration... (never seen one to test though!) but they all fit! :)

lol no 1.1 would be worse than a vtr box ha

top end yeah.. but bottom end they make them go like f*** aparantly cos of the shorter ratios...

yeah vtr or 1.1 box would be a shit mod to make. you will regret it instantly lol. my gearbox went on my vts about 18 months ago so i bought 1 off ebay for £250 and its been fine ever since. the only difference is the gear stick is slightly stiffer but you wouldnt notice it, its only because I was used to the 1 before.

the gearbox to go for if you are seeking faster acceleration is the 106 rallye box but your top speed will drop to about 110 - 115mph

Aye the final drive in the 1.1 box is great but the rest is wank, shite diff, and the gearset isnt the sports cluster like on the VT/GTi/Rallye boxes.

And as said the 1.3 Rallye has the best ratios, but theyre rare and expensive. MPG will drop quite badly, and youll top out at 122mph.

The best all round road box is probably the 106 XSi box which is shorter than a VTS box but longer than a Rallye box

thanks im not particully lookin for faster accelaration just wanna get it going again was worried with what the gearbox builder said about them being different but ive spoken to alot of other people and they all say the vts/106 gto boxs are the same get one and it will fit, the gearbox man is pretty good he knows his stuff but its his word against every1 elses not 1 person has said to me it wont fit
