Rev Counter not working

Wont make its mind up whether to work or not to.
80% of the time it dosent work but every now and then it will just go crazy and move the needle to whatever it feels like.
Will this just be a loose connector or something? as it works just not very well and not all the time. please help as its driving me mad not having one

could possibly be a bad earth, or frayed wiring behind the dash.

For a start I would unhook the battery for a few hours and see if it's anything simple like that.
