Over the past few weeks i have had serious problems with my clutch and gear box. Over 4k revs i get a really horrible grinding noise and whines on acceleration in first and second! Now i cannot get into 5th gear.
I have been told that the thrust bearing may have gone and the clutch is definatley gone but i am hoping that the gear box is fine.
I havnt had chance to sort this problem out yet due to money issues with it being xmas and all, so any advice greatly appreciated.
its a 98 VTR

the whining could be caused by low oil level in g/box
not getting into 5th gear could be gear linkage. faulty g/box or a worn cluth

if you cant get it into 5th its DEFO the synco
on the end of the box is a little unit what unscrews its that in there whats fooked
just replace it usually pick up a box from french parts around £180 inc v.a.t (i have just got one)
and while the box is off just get a new clutch on the thrust bearing comes with it
sorted usually a whining noise indicates a fooked box

go on google type in french parts in (wherever you live)
around £180 inc v.a.t for the box and a good garage should fit it for £100

Totally foooked! The clutch went on me today smileys/smiley19.gif Last nite i got 5th gear back, but when trying to get out of reverse i really had to force the gear lever! What do you guys think, should i just replace the clutch/thrust bearing or replace the gear box too? Maybe the oil in the gear box needs replacing? Either way when idling the car makes a realli horrible noise and u can smell the clutch burning!

when you buy a clutch its usually a 3 part one which consists of a housing, plate and thrust bearing
as far as the whining noise this is the gearbox defo it you cant get it into 5th
i would recommend getting a new clutch and gear box it will cost you less in the long run and if your lucky like me you may find some reconditioners that will take your old box off your hands for some reddies
replace both mate

I can get it in 5th now tho! Thats what makes me think its just the clutch! I have some one coming out to look at it next week, then hopefully they will be able to tell me for sure if the gear box is knackered! Because i dont really want to have to change the gear box if i dont need to because it wont be cheap!

i had a whining noise from my clutch which stopped when i compressed the clutch pedal. It was also slipping in 3rd and 4th. Got a new clutch fitted for £125 2 days ago and everythins perfect. no noise. no slipping. no fucked thrust bearing. couldnt help you with the 5th gear situation tho bud, except maybe undo ur gear surround and have a look at the plastic ball that ur gear stick is set in to. (if its the same on ur model) because mine was cracked and i had difficulty selecting gear. new ones £15 from citroen

ur gear situation probably wont be what was wrong with mine... but if it is then get the part and fit it urself. cost me £45 quid in the end and its apparently a piece of piss to fit. tells u in the haynes.
