Hi all.

I have a query yet again about my little sax. Ok It sounds like a bearing gone but I am not sure where from.

Was thinking release bearing but it makes no difference if I dip the clutch or not, the sound remains.

Upon further driving I noticed when I take a left or right hand bend the noise goes away and was thinking maybe power steering pump is on its way out. As of yet there is no issue with stiffness of turning the wheel. Road wheels have been checked and there is no excess movement. The noise started as an intermitant fault be is now persistant and starts after about 5 mins of driving.

Please help!

Cheers

Marc

Can you describe the noise?

Here's how to check your bearings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSsC-lWB1lg

Could be driveshaft cv joints.

Sounds like driveshaft, had it myself, the ends were dry as a nun

Its very much like a grinding/vibrating noise. Imagine a loose bearing on a skateboard wheel or a washing machine drum and when you spin the wheel/drum it shimmies. Thats how it seems to me.

It does not increase with speed and the sound remains constant except for when I go below 30mph when it goes altogether. I can dip the clutch and freewheel and it is still there untill below 30mph ish. It only starts after about 5 mins of driving, it gradually becomes more audiable. Its does go away round right hand bends and gets less round left hand bends but returns when the car is in a straight line again. Somtimes when I get to 70mph it will go away but as soon as I lift off the throttle to begin to slow it comes back. :wall:

Might be worth adding that is sounds like it is coming from the front of the car.

Engine or gearbox mount? Exhaust touching the car?

lrbsax

exhaust does knock on the car body when starting up but not when driving. the sound made when driving is totally different from the knock when starting/

Getting to dark to see the mounts. Will have to check them tomorrow if I cant get it to my mate. Does the water pump have bearings? dont want them shearing if I have a drive in to town tomoz!

Does it sound like this at all?

I posted the problem on here last week, in the end it turned out to be a new driveshaft needed, old one was fucked, then needed new wheel bearings and then to top it all off, wheel balancing.

After I got the driveshaft done my sound didn't kick in as much, then the wheel bearing got done and it went completely.. Only had wheel balancing done as a precaution.. Hope this helps :y:

Well what can I say. Yes yes and yes. That is the very sound.:y: Thankyou very much you have set my mind at ease.

May I ask how much the driveshaft set you back?

Thanks again Domleydon. :p Cant believe I am happy that I wil be spending yet more money on it hehe

Driveshaft set me back £90, Wheel Bearing are a real cunt tho, I would also advise getting the wheel bearings done first, due to that made the sound go completely, it was just my driveshaft fucked soo badly that made it loud.

Yep driveshaft and wheel bearing, At first it was annoying and everyone said wheel bearing, so I got both fronts done, and they were knackered.

A few days later it started again but louder!!! what the hell, got a few people saying mounts, gearbox, clutch, driveshaft maybe...

Got the car lowered and it went completely, Only to come back 2 weeks later so horrible, bouncing around gears and i couldn't even crawl without it doing it eventually, Finally got it changed and it was absolutely fucked, the end sounded like a 10 pound bag of smashed assholes being shaken about.

Cost me £80 per shaft and then £40 to fit by Ricky P,
And the wheel bearings were £20 and £30 to fit each I think... They are a real penis to do!

Cheers for the info peeps. Its booked in for next monday. My mechanic mate rekons just wheel bearings rather than driveshafts as if it was a drive shaft it would make a noise all the time but time will tell. Gonna go with the cheap option first me thinks!

Sorry to all the folk I doubted when they said wheel bearings earlier in the post. Strangest sounding dead bearing I have ever heard lol. Yet more idiosyncratic ways of the saxo. lol

Ok I got the brum back. Wheel bearings turned out to be fine. Drivers side drive shaft was the cause of said rumbling. Cost 115 to fix at mates rates. Hope this helps you guys with the same problems. :y:
