basically, how much did you lot spend on general living / maintanence costs @ uni?

NOT including accomodation or a car etc etc

for a term, how much cash was splashed on essentials / partying?

Well i get a maintence loan of roughly £3.5k a year. Really just depends on how sensible you are with the money given to you and whether or not you have a part time job. Are you about to start then?

Ryan
5th August 2009, 16:08

CampDavid
5th August 2009, 16:08
While I was at uni I made £250+ a week as a sales chump at PC World, spent all of it.

In realiity you can get by on about £50 a week if you're smart

isn't it a bit stupid to keep it..

worrying about a car at uni, pretty pointless. sell the s for 2k, cancel insurance if you have already paid in full = more money back.

i spend about £40 a week... but i stay at home so dont pay for for for food or that.... only like my lunch and travel costs :y:

I wouldnt have been without my car at uni..... Which is why i went and bought a 172 to start my second year lol!

Not every uni has great transport networks around it, plus if you live miles away from home a car is often useful to have.

im working the now but hoping to get into uni next year. saving as much as i can the now so i can treat myself to something with a bit more oomph than the vts before i go... yes this may be financial suicide but i'll only be running the car 1 day a week/2 at the most :y:

£80 a week for food an drink i could cope with :D

there is a lot of people on here with vts's and they have them as they like them, if we all wanted something boring them we would get it. im keeping my vts as i love it and i can just afford to lol

I would say i spend around 30-35 a week on food and 30 on alcomahol. so your looking at 70 a week, although u can probs do it for less, but i just make the most of it lol, loans can be repaid back, precious time getting wasted on weekday nights, you can't!

Edit: also i had my car through second year, didn't need it at all, used it barely ocne a week to go to the supermarket other then that its pointless, especially first year students half the time your not allowed one as they don't have adequate parking.

+1 agreed, its no fun if you dont make the most of your times at uni

id assume 2nd year accomodation would be cheaper anyway

another question:

ensuite? or non ensuite?

oh and im pretty much gaurenteed good hours at my current job during the holidays!

Pieface

I'm going En-Suite for £85 a week. The best at our Uni lolz0r

When I was at uni first year I got a 3.5k maintenance loan and a 3.3k tuition fee's loan,

however my on campus rent totalled to 3480 so I had 20 according to them to live off for a year.

So obviouslly I just relied on my overdraft and extended it whenever which is what everyone I know has seemed to do.

2nd year accomodation is cheaper but you have to fork out for you're own bills.

I spent fuck all on food, probably about 30 a week, probably about 100 a week going out and on alcohol.

Ashleyp
5th August 2009, 17:08
some good responses here :) i rekcon if i be tight i could do it

Ha. I love how selling the car is not an option. :')

You can cut your food expenses dramatically if you live off whatever pops up on: http://www.hotukdeals.com/groceries/deals/hot.

on the loan calculator thingy, it was nearly 4k loan, and near 2k in grant

Mate you'll be totally fine i'd imagine, the loan will cover accomodation along with some food, and the grant will cover whatever else you want

Ashleyp

ensuit for extra £7 a months = win

and although i wont be using the car in manchester, when im back id need it to get to work etc etc

flynnsvtr

The whole maintenance loan is a joke, as a bloke before said, i got 3400 in maintenance loan, accomo for teh year was somethin like 3340, so it gives you crap all lol, just open up an account with halifax, you get a 3000 interest free overdraft, its the way forward!

I wouldn't worry about finances its one of those things where we can tell you what we do but once u get there things will probably change, freshers week u will spend fuck-tonnes i would imagine, i spent about 200, but u soon learn your weekly budget lol

0rang3peel
5th August 2009, 18:57
yeah as flynns said, I did actually make a post before but my pc died,

but basically don't worry about money if you get all the loans and stuff it is the wrong attitude to be honest. Everyone is in the same boat and its a once in a lifetime scenario. Just go party hard and don't look back.

carlos is right. I've left my VTS at Sayer Towers, occasionally I wish I had it but tbh I don't miss it and I have a shit load more cash to play with. It's actually quite an eye opener how much a car costs to run :fcuk:

oh and ashley you can save a packet by learning to cook, avoiding shitty takeaways and microwave meals, making friends (no matter how much of a boring twatard they are) with someone who owns a car
