vtr mirrors

is it possible to get the exterior mounting plate off the standard saxo wing mirrors? ie, remove it from the mirror glass mount (i dont mean remove it from the car)....

i have the all black plastic wing mirrors on my saxo and i have bought the vtr ones with the colour coded plate on off ebay and the base plate on the offside mirror is slightly cracked off in one corner, so my idea was to use the backing plate from my original mirrors. Ive put these new mirrors on now and just ignore the crack but if its possible then i will transfer the backing plates..
