quite a few people mesh their standard grille & have the plastic painted up mate. some put badges on the mesh, others keep the chevrons or even paint the cevrons up as well

(sorry about pic size if it ends up massive)
...Basically stick-on chrome stuff.
I still have some of it if you want it.

take it to a body shop and get the grill smoothed out:

Joe isn't the grill designed to be there for a reason? - to cool the engine (or something like that!)
What implications does smoothing it out have on performance?? smileys/smiley5.gif

i want mine smoothed, How much did you pay and how do you open the bonet.
lozi_murias - You just more the air feed, to the bumper or somthing.... so the air flows to your filter same way just differant place.

The original grill doesnt let fuck all air in anyway, so your not missing out! If you want performance - buy an enclosed filter and attach the air feed anywhere on the front bumper.
The engine isnt air cooled anyway - thats what the water filled radiator is for. The fan is there to aid cooling.
Anyway - depending on where you take it - your looking at a couple of hundred, which will include welding in a plate, smoothing, and re-painting

what about the opening of the bonnet?

opening is simple, you can either attach something to the existing release (under bonnet), so you can reach it from under the bottom lip of the bonnet
...or just remove it, but still use the release (inside the car)
But this risks the bonnet flying open if you forget to secure it properly....
I think!
Your best bet is to speak to Certifiable - he's got it done
