Right this is probably a really stupid question but i cant find any answers on here or a google search. Is it actualy illigal to not have a cat or is just required for the mot? thanks

i don't drive with a cat well i sometimes do but he goes a bit mad running around the car :P or it just sleeps on the back seat.

Its illegal to not have a cat on your car.

However if your car is older than 14years iirc? You dont have to have one, cos M1VT doesnt on his ratty bonnetted golf.

its not illegal to not have a cat just as long as it would pass an emissions test so in theory yes it is illegal but technically no

not really sure but i know some cars have passed emmitions and thus passing the mot with a de-cat so if it passes an mot then i would of thought it would be legal. 99percent of cars wouldnt though i suppose so i suppose your lucky if you decat the exhaust and it passes emmitions.

If it miraculously passes an MOT without the Cat then fair enough

But on the roads and in the eyes of the law it is an offence not to have a cat regardless of what may or may not have been passed on the MOT

It is only cars Pre-1993 (iirc K reg) which are exempt from having cats as they werent a legal requirement back then
