Looking at getting a new car within a month or two and can't decide between these two, opinions would be appreciated. Cheers:y:

MK5 Zetec S is not better built lol! The interior plastics are shockingly cheep and flimsy, your suspension will still knock and clang if you lower the car.
Tthe engine is pretty durable if a bit underpwoered. A good alrounder but its by no means more better put together than a Saxo VTR.
Saxo is lighter and will probably give slightly better MPG's by a small fraction. Performance wise not a huge amount in it.

Same, for me it was always between imperial blue fiesta Zetec S, and a saxo VTR in poseidon blue.
As you say, depends on the day which I prefer looks wise too.

Rushy, the interior of most Zetec S', including the MK5s, are usually aren't very plasticy at all?

Thats a point, its more like sponge.
1) When your inside a MK5 Zetec S try opening the door with the handle, tell me it "doesnt" feel like its going to snap in your hands
2) The pointless plastic covers over the seat rails/fittings on the front seats. I can almost certainly say that the metal brackets underneath the plastic will be some kind of rust on them
3) Cheapo dials with crap backing light
3) Horrible grey centre console with ELC buttons
4) Steering wheel that discolored over time/useage. Blue hands anyone?
5) Glovebox hinge will eventually break
6) Front speaker grills are made of toilet tissue
Let me know if you need more points..

Indeed Tom!
Shan's car is a "fair" example and only subtle mods. And its still falling to peices on the inside :(

i have a friend who has a Zetec-S on 45k, it features all of these problems, but his steering wheel is actually colourless now its got so bad, and one of his door handles has actually snapped off, plus his leccy windows have packed up.
LOL

Personally i think the saxo is a better car all round, plus chavs seem to be all over the zetec-s at the moment. The chavs rarely bother with saxos anymore leaving them to more respectable kids

Thats probably stage two of the life of a Zetec S lol.
My missus one is now growing rust on one of the rear arches! Ford dont really learn do they?

i'd probably go with whichever one is in the lowest insurance group! :D

Owned both, the vtr was slightly faster tbh but find the zetec s better overall imo (Air con, heat front screen/mirrors etc). Plus i get 45mpg + on a run quite easily.

VTR then. But even then insurance goes by the car itself as well as insurance group I always thought?

if you get the zetec-s make sure its the phase2 2001 onwards. better engine, nicer interior and has nice centre caps lol

The Zetec S performance wise is quite limited to change though you could do a straight swap to a 1700 puma block. Personally I'd stay with a Saxo, my mate pays more for his ZS insurance than I pay for my vTs

I thought you were desribing a saxo until I got to the blue steering weheel part.

I thought you were desribing a saxo until I got to the blue steering weheel part.
On the GTi the interior door handles are tidy
You dont get gay plastics on the seat rails and no rust on mine (just engine bay lol)
GTi VDO dials are the shit :D
Okay the centre console aint so great
And the glove box is a bit pants, speaker covers are surely better?
Hence
GTi > VTR > MK ZS5?

Which models this? Never had a problem with this before.
2) The pointless plastic covers over the seat rails/fittings on the front seats. I can almost certainly say that the metal brackets underneath the plastic will be some kind of rust on them
My Zetec's 8 years old and theres no rust on the brackets at all...
3) Cheapo dials with crap backing light
The lightings fine and does the job it's meant to do. What do you want, a rave/to be blinded every time you start your ignition?
3) Horrible grey centre console with ELC buttons
Once again, it does the job it's meant to.
4) Steering wheel that discolored over time/useage. Blue hands anyone?
That happens with a lot more than just Ford steering wheels if you drive it often enough, and it's easy to resolve.
5) Glovebox hinge will eventually break
Never ever known this to happen unless you utterly rag the glove box door as will happen with any hinge.
6) Front speaker grills are made of toilet tissue
Is this something you've seen? They're of good quality and have withstood heavy bass at high volumes (not because of my choosing, i might add) without blowing or becoming damaged.
Let me know if you need more points..

Sigh..
1) Which models this? Never had a problem with this before
I dont know where Jarrow is but your more than welcome to pop over to Walsall to "feel" my GF's handles
2) My Zetec's 8 years old and theres no rust on the brackets at all...
So you admit the plastics covering them are pointless though? Why would you have removed the plastics in the first place? In our case they were removed as they kept popping off themselves, oh wait thats another addition to the list
3) The lightings fine and does the job it's meant to do. What do you want, a rave/to be blinded every time you start your ignition?
I agree it "does" the job, the conversation was about the poor interior. Sooooooo, Im talking about how the dials and the lighting in them is poor when compared to the VTR. Try to keep to topic..
4) That happens with a lot more than just Ford steering wheels if you drive it often enough, and it's easy to resolve.
I agree with that point, but not on a VTR ;)
5) Never ever known this to happen unless you utterly rag the glove box door as will happen with any hinge.
Dude, dont make me make a poll on ZSOC right now asking how many peoples glovebox is broke!
6) Is this something you've seen? They're of good quality and have withstood heavy bass at high volumes (not because of my choosing, i might add) without blowing or becoming damaged.
I will upload photographic evidence tomorrow morning. I promise. My missus dont run "window rattling bass" and its still broken purely from something in the doorbin hitting it.
My points are all valid and I have evidence. What you fail to realise is between me and my girlfriend we own both a 106 GTi and Fiesta ZS. I drive the damn thing regularly. I wouldnt make comments if I didnt have any info to back them up.

Tbh, hes asking which are the better of the two cars, and all of these points are things are pretty relevant, why settle for something which has all of these problems over something that doesnt.
As a side note, the paint on citroen's is 1000000% better than on fords.

Saxo definatly has issues. But being honest there not as badly put together as people make out.
They usually fall to part if the owner doesnt look after them.
This ZS has fallen apart interior wise after general use. True story y'all.

now back on topic, i've only ever driven one zetec s an it wasnt a good time really (possible bad example) enjoyed my vtr more
also there seemed to be quick abit of rust underneath the drivers door rubber which i was assured was normal
still decent enough cars though
