Hai.

Been looking around for some new cars that i can afford.

Been looking at the 01 ish astra sxi's.

The insurance is pretty much the same as my furio...

Just wondering what the astras are like?

Or any other suggestions of something fun without the mega high insurance of a saxo...?

Scoobies and Evos are family cars too

Obviously the Astra wont be as fast as the 2 above but can still be made too look nice

the question was regarding fun, although they can be made to look nice imo, fun is something theyre not meant to be

if i had an astra, i personally wouldnt do anything to it, its a nice daily driver

They are nice,
Mine's very nippy! 3 door, same old annoying situation of having to get out so people can get in etc. Loads of boot space.

To be honest, since I've had mine I don't feel like going back down a size of car lol

3 door models are quite nippy. they are a LOT more sensible than a saxo but theyre not a boring family car. astra turbo? they can go fast.

not on the same scale as a saxo though obviously. but you cant really compare the two, astra can have stuff like traction control, cruise control and air con. and you can pick them up for properly CHEAP as there are literally millions of them.

by the way mate id say dont get the sxi get the SRi with the 2.0L 16v engine... the insurance will be more expensive but it wont kill you still being fairly cheaper than a vts.

i liked ma m8s astra. they nice cars ma mate never had a problem with his, unlike my saxo which is constantly falling to bits. so imo m8 if you were to get one try getting a sri.

i agree with claff, i would go for the sri if anything, and like he said, you cant really compare to a saxo as theyre two completely different target market car's, it comes down to what the OP wants? saxo - cheap, no frills fun.. astra - maybe not as fun, but a few extra mod cons and a generally better car

The 03 plates got smoked lights front and back which look good.

My Aunty got a 1.6 16V its not a SXI though but that was nippy enough. Nice drive etc.

ello, well i have a astra sxi 1.8 16v and i think its might it is different to my m8's cars which are saxo's, pugs and corsa's, i wounldnt think of it as a family car mybe the 5dr but i have the 3dr in black looks realy smart and like it has been said the boot space is big which is usefull so i can put the bike in the back and all gd no messing with a bike rack

maybe not so much a family car (the sri upwards) but a more sensible and practical hatchback with a nice selection of extra's, as opposed to a cheap & chuckable french tin can (saxo)?

yeh i know wot u mean i would of liked the sri or the turbo but seen as i am only 17 it not worth trying on insurance but yeh a realy nice car to drive

Yeah unfortunately when your 17 or have had your license under a year youll find it difficult to get insured at a reasonable price even on a 1.4. As far as an astra goes your probably right, 1.6 sxi is about the most you can hope for on the insurance side of things.

depends what you want in a car though... the furio will be nippier on acceleration than the astra and much better cornering, in my opinion though astras look nicer when theyre modified. Alloys from an astra turbo plus lowered always looks nice. add on those irmisher body kits i think you can get and it will look good.

So, if your after looks, practicality/safety and comfort go for the astra. If you want speed, cornering and good fuel eco then its the saxo.

yeh claff is right mine is stock standard i will try get some pics up lost my usb lead for camera will try and get it, anyway i agree on the practicality and safety side i would like to be in my astra then a saxo for that plus the speed it not to bad but when the saxo is alot smaller then it will be nippy, but the cornering is not to bad in the astra and i would rather drive my astra to a saxo drove my m8's and there ok but i would have the astra not saying saxo's are bad car, well it my first car so will not know wot a smaller car drives like

claff, would the astra not have similar fuel eco to a furio? arent the vaux engines "ecotech"?

the fuel is not to bad on them it depends on how u drive it, i would say u get about 37mpg

I had a 3dr 1.8 16v astra mk4, good car, more reliable then the saxo I can already tell. But apart from being more reliable and bigger/roomy, the astra is pretty boring! my vts would completely ruin my old astra in fun factor. If I was getting an mk4 astra again now it would be GSi 2.0 turbo or Sri 2.0 turbo (kind of rare) or nothing.

They still look good though if you cant afford an mk5 astra, but if you are into your speed/handling I wouldn't recommend.

the handling is not to bad but yet i dont think u would be able to throw it around like a saxo but its a bigger car so theres the difference plus i would have had the turbo aswell but i have said on the other comment i am 17 so i wouldnt get insured on it but i am happy with my astra for my first car

Oh yeah the astra is a nice car to own! Sorry didn't mean it to seem like I'm putting it down, I've had two mk4 astra's! lol

And for your 1st car you're way ahead of alot of other people, that's the good thing with the astra, the insurance groups are pretty good for the spec of the models.

claff, would the astra not have similar fuel eco to a furio? arent the vaux engines "ecotech"? they are ecotec yeah but my impression is the ecotec system is about lowering emissions... they include a more restrictive cat/exhaust i think, but this doesnt mean they use up less fuel i dont think, just makes the stuff that comes out of the tailpipe less harmful.

saxos are so much lighter, and have a small aerodynamic body so when driving carefully it would be better on petrol. This wouldnt be a main thing tho because astras are good on petrol considering the size of the engine.
