View Full Version : Problem Starting Car - Despite Jump Cables

I'm having problems getting the car to start. It has been sat for a while, Incase that gives any indication to corrosion somewhere.

I try to turn the key and It attempts to spark, which is struggles. It's quite obviously the battery. So I attached my mates car to mine using jump cables and tried that. No success. Even after checking the connections several times, removing and moving them around a bit. I also left her car running for 5 min with gentle revs whilst attached. Nada...

Any ideas?

Is your starter motor cranking the engine with or without jump leads?

Yeah, that's fine I think. It does seem symptomatic of a battery type problem because the dash board, digital display for example, fades as it has when I've had a dead battery before. Rather than just going "off". At the point when it struggles to "spark" the last time before doing nothing.

So it's not cranking (ie spinning the engine round)? If not then I agree your battery is likely dead and your jump leads are not good enough/have poor connection so your dead battery is sucking all the juice before it even reaches the starter. Try disconnecting battery negative wire and put your black jump lead to your enginge block somewhere ( this will cutt your suspect battery out of the equation all togethor). If you have bright lights then it's deffo your battery.
Hope you get it sorted mate

Not sure why he has said not to bump start it, does not really help without a reason why. He's possibly concerned about voltage spike killing your ecu. Why don't you swap battery with your mate, if yours starts then you will know for sure it is your battery

yeh he is right you only bump start it if its the worst case senario. It could be the spark plugs if you say the spark plugs are attempting to start the car, get ti checked out by someone. You can call out moblie mechanics who can tell you whats up and in some cases will help you to a garage, with a charge of course. Worth a try mate thats what id do. Also get a battery and alternator tester from maplin. I work there and there only £5, it tells you by small led's if the alternator or the battery are strong moderate or weak, this too might get to your problem faster

good luck mate :y:
