A night manager is on about 21-25k + night premium so say another 5k?

No idea of exact figures, but Tesco pay very well. Not sure if staff still get on to the bonus scheme thing they run, but its good too

They do a good pension, good share incentives and even for basic staff they one of the better payers and you gotta try real hard to ever get sacked as they "support your attendance" and all such like shiz

They work nights like proper dogs tho, i'd rather earn less and be a day manager tbh, or train up as a baker ;)

I'm only team leader but I'm on £6.70 an hour plus premiums (time and half) for working nights, Sundays and bank holidays. Always a good atmosphere working there aswell. Yeah they are usually really good on holidays and if you want days off etc. You can get shift swaps pretty easy or take it unpaid if you can get cover. Pay as you earn and Save as you earn schemes are pretty good. Can earn a reasonable 2-3k a year of shares, which is pretty sweet. Plus you get first dibs on the alcohol offers too :drink: .

Very much doubt a Tesco will let you walk in as a manager, does happen, but not much if you dont know another higher up manager ;)
Whats somerfield pay for nights as a supervisor?

well at the min its 6.63 or something for supervisor and duty manager and night premium is time and a 1/3. So unless i nail the overtime i only see about 900 a month after tax. Im getting to the point where i want to move out but cant afford it. Iv been a supervisor and manager for a year so its not like i would be walking in unexperienced.

Team leader on nights at tesco gets rougly £1300-£1400 four weekly before tax thats not including weekend rates.
Get about £830 a month basic as a daytime shelf stacker/checkout girl
What do you know about the running of Tesco's?

sainsburys & waitrose while i was doing gcse and alevels.
I also know people who work at tescos.
What is tescos, 6 pounds an hour or so? its just boring work, and the managers tend to have to work terrible hours.
Maybe it was just my experiences, but the employees tended to get treated bad from seniors and customers.

Although, i must add, i had some of my best laughs after the stores had closed.

Theres a reason supermarkets make so much money... its because they squeeze the max out of their staff and make them work bad hours doing a boring job for a mediocre pay. and if you dont pull your weight then in these times they really dont need you and better yet for them theres people literally queuing up to take your place.
there are a lot of people i know who worked for sainsburys who said they would honestly rather be unemployed. i have never worked for one but im happy doing what i do and get paid more for it as well

Rather keep my money and actually spend it on my daughter myself!

You might find he's night trading manager on that figure.
Right, after 4 years at Tesco I feel like I should contribute to this thread.
Just left after 4 years service. Worked freezers for 12 months filling stock, hated it (Department was understaffed and some managers were dreamers)
Then Ive just ended a 3 year stint on the checkouts.
Being a checkout operator/customer assistant/till boy(girl)/checkout slag ... is one of the most boring jobs ever ... (ok Im only comparing to working in a barbers or waiting on at a pub, taht I have experience of) but Im warranted with saying its boring as f*ck!
However, its pays £6.50+ an hour, for sitting on your arse (though I did prefer to stand most of the time) and is a stupidly easy job...could literally do it blindfolded.
Yes customers can be a bit of a b*tch... and you do have to take some flack from Chavs when you wont serve them on a friday night cos theyre with their 13 year old girlfriend.... but that just comes with it.
However, 10% disount on everything bar petrol does come in handy, as does the share scheme ( to give you an idea, Ive been given £600 worth of shares over 4 years...), you have a union representing you whether youre a member or not, you have a diverse mix of staff, and most enjoy a good laugh.
BUT....
I also felt stupidly unappreciated, even though I often took it upon myself to do work beyond my duties, and managers preferred to give you a b*llocking for stepping off your till, rather than priase you for the job you stepped off to do so you were actually doing something rather than stand their with no customers lookin like a lemon.
However, I understand that this varies from store to store and is dependant upon your managers (and largely the store manager).
I have a mate whos progressed from workin there while at college in the bakery, to Warehouse Team Leader, To 'Re-fit' team leader supervising a team of staff when our store was having a refurb, to signing on 'options' and now due to his bakery experience is Bakery Manager, was able to negotiate a higher wage, and is now undertaking further training to become a master baker, and again will see an increase in wage. Oh an btw, on his last training course he was put in a 5* hotel with Bistro Restaurant, and was virtually all expenses, bar drinks. Once youre in the boys club.... it only goes upwards.
Hes now 24, with an Audi S3 and earns around £24k per year.... and like Ive said... his wages will only ever go up... and up... and up
If you can get on and put up with a retail environment and dont mind bein breathed on from above .... its not a bad route to take...
But I also think that your face has to fit... I know mine didnt... which is why Im not pursuing a career there.
Sorry for the essay lol

Thank you for taking the time to make such a lengthy reply mate. As i said at the moment im on the management team at somerfield but my next level of promotion would be trading manager (Basically assistant manager) but for the ammount of work and hassle you get, the pay is shit all. Tesco sounds like an ok place to work seem to have very very good benefits and progression opportunitys (sp) im prepared to stay in a retail environment as like i have said i enjoy my job its just the fact i get paid fuck all that grates lol. At the minute iv applied at asda and will also apply at tesco i think. Maybe marks and spencers as well.

Working nights don't half fuck you up, so be prepared for that.
Generally do more work than during the day too, as the big delivery(s) comes at night, good in some ways as it keeps you going, bad in others as you have to work pretty hard.
Although the managers do tend to wander around for a bit of the night, expected really, someone's got to keep an eye on everyone (you usually end up with one or two who try to get away with doing nowt).
One good thing about supermarket work though, is that you know your job will be pretty secure, lets face it, everyone needs groceries.

i have been at tesco for 7 years now and im a team leader on nights and im on just over £10 an hour after tax im getting around £8.21p an hour which tbh aint a bad salary i dont think
[QUOTE=Bickerton;3643586]Very much doubt a Tesco will let you walk in as a manager, does happen, but not much if you dont know another higher up manager ;)[QUOTE]
yeah i very much doubt ya will be able to walk straight into management although ya might be able to get on to a fast track to management course and thats something ya could ask about if ya can get an interview but tbh on nights as just a GA you would earn what ya earning currently
tesco are regarded as having one of the best if not the best management training schemes in the retain buisness so its rare people out of the company walk into management but once ya become a tesco manager most other supermarkets are easier to get into as management cos they know you have been trained the tesco way

I work at Tesco part-time in the store in Flitwick, it's perfect for me being a student, good pay and hourly rate goes up every year, also get discount and shares etc. Everyone has a right laugh even the managers and tbh if I had nothing else I would work there full time good money to be made for easy work.

Coming in as a supervisor from another store i would expect you to fulfill at least 6 months of service in any role before even considering you for further development. Having said that whilst new the more you pick up and the more you prove yourself, the quicker you will progress.
Tesco Night Manager = £35k+ they are the equivalent of a store manager but through the night, dependant on experience/number of past stores this can easily reach £50k. They will have night replen managers working for them running the shift.
Night Replen Manager = £25k+ usually 1-6 per shift dependant on store size. I know night replen managers who earn £35+ due to good moves in the past!
All the major retailers are in the same sorta pay bracket, the job is unrewarding and demoralising! However getting a nice enough pay cheque every month, discount etc its not all doom and gloom.

It's just a case of weighing it up, if you have no qualification and want a pretty easy unskilled decentish paid job, then do nights at tesco.
If you can get a better job, do that instead, just some people don't have that luxury
