Course it matters, have you never thought that increase in premiums for modded cars is there for a reason?

If you don't tell them, your insurance is void.
The more people who do this, makes our premiums go even higher.

If you do not tell your insurance company about your modifications it is like not having any insurance at all! Insurance companys are robbing bstds and are always looking for a get out clause.......

Worth noting that a specialist insurer will cover modifications on a like for like basis - eg if your aftermarket exhaust is damaged in an accident, it will be replaced with an aftermarket exhaust.
You should declare ALL changes to the vehicle and it pays to pick your insurance company very carefully if you are looking at modifying the car.
I wouldn't lsiten to your brother, he's giving out bad advice.

its not all bad advice...

he's right in this respect, you'r normal insurance company's (specialist tuning ones might be different) will charge you extra for mod's but if something happens to them or you write off the car/have it written off then in my experience you wont get any extra back for them.
they will value the car at what they reckon is a current market price but the value of any mod's wont affect this price/any payout they make. as said, they will look for any way to get out of paying up in the event of a claim, anything not 'standard' and undeclared will make your policy worthless mate
