yep, 2\3 years as a newbie officer, then you can choose what you want to specialise in, but most forces will want a more "experienced" officer, so what wack another 3 years on top of that!
varies force to force, thats the general rule though!

Ive always for about doing this. its one of those jobs where everyday is different, would be a lot of fun going to work knowing not whats going to happen.

I recently applied for the Police...
Went threw the whole recruitment stage, but sadly got rejected. Obviously now I know what to expect, so I shall re-apply when they re-open recruitment.
But to get into it, go onto your county police website, and there should be an option on there to "work for the police"?
they send you an application and you apply etc. Takes MONTHS, but it is worth it.
After recruitment you're given a selection of roles to take in the police force,
ie; traffic, crime scene investigation, dog handling, firearms etc.
Deffinitely recommend applying but it is a long process...
Best of luck though :)

only problem is when you become a traffic officer, your legs have to be cut off, then you have to grow some in the unlikley event you have to get out of the car. your decision though :p

Get to do 2 years service first before you can apply to go into anything else, but you need to go on a course to even drive a normal police car first.

no don't be a special, they have no power whatsoever they are not alowed to drive a car. if you going to go down the police route do it properly. :y:

As a Special Constable you will be given training and a uniform, and have all the powers and authority of regular officers.
oh really?

actually you're wrong there mate, as a special constable you have full powers of arrest and have the exact same powers as a paid police officer. I'm not sure on the driving the car aspect but you do have full powers of arrest, put simply, you are a voluntary officer. PCSO's on the other hand, who are paid, don't have powers of arrest and are paid...go figure!
I know this because i've wanted to join the police ever since 13, plus im studying law atm to give me a good background for it fella:y:

PCSO - No power , not alowed to drive
Special - some power , not alowed to drive.

its extremly hard i enquired summat like 3 years normal service and to get that normal service might involve 12 months or more working in your spare time for a very small amount in the toy town police psco or special as that will favour highly in you getting into the force in the 1st place after 3 years and numerous tests you will be able to apply to become one and go on the advanced course and everything, but its alot of years really with no garuntees. and yes i dont like the police BUT i did take an interest being a traffic officer it is very appealing still but the amount of work to become one and being forced to hit targets for things i dont believe in i couldnt be one.

also again as much as i dispise, if you get into the police force face it youve a job for life, good retirement and i imagine it to be pretty awesome to encounter many challenges and deal with people. you deffinately wouldnt get the feeling of a 9 to 5 job plus excitement.
if i carry on i sound like i wouldnt mind being one lmfao but no what ive said in earlier threads still stays for me.

true what you say. I for one can't wait to graduate and apply, excellent prospects for graduates with the Accelerated Promotion scheme. I really can't see myself sitting in an office, no matter how highly paid it would be, can't beat the variety of the police :y:

special is EXACTLY the same as a police officer, except they don't get paid..
And if the force chooses to put the SPC on a driving course, they can drive with blues and twos...

i thought specials had special grants of around £2-4000 for the year or at the end of the year?

PCSO - No power , not alowed to drive
Special - some power , not alowed to drive.
Not necessarily true atall it will vary from force to force
I was originally a special for warwickshire and got to drive after passing the course
And a girl who im training with currently came from Essex police as a PCSO and she got passed through her driving course within a month

Correct
Specials do have FULL POWERS OF ARREST exactly the same as PC's
They are sworn in exactly the same and have a warrant card
There is absolutely no difference other than the pay
