Well, whilst in town at lunchtime, I couldnt resist a look in JEssops front window. I guess the issue there is that myself and Steve tend to sit on this bench outside Jessops each lunchtime.
We always end up talking about photography at some point.
So, today, I went in 'just for a look'. My trusty sales dude was there, Tim. I was asking him about my lens queries... whether to get a dedicated macro lens for fun stuff and a seperate telephots for motorsport, etc... or get a combined lens.
After a bit of debate and checking out the prices (Has anyone checked out the price for a Canon macro with large focal length £1050!!!)...
... I decided to buy a lens to brake me into things from both aspects, with the view to upgrading the kit at a alter date, when I know what the hell I want to focus upon... and how to do it smileys/smiley17.gif
Yes, I know I was only supposed to be window shopping, but sometimes these thigns happen. smileys/smiley17.gif
Not the most ideal F-range, but Im sure it'll still produce some great shots smileys/smiley2.gif
What do you think?

Nice lens! I fear it'll be a bit slow for motorsport as it it's HSM (the Sigma version of USM) but DG lenses produce some quality pics!
The 'f range' is that bad actually! 5.6 @ 300mm is pretty good!

Just had a play... although the lens is a little slower than the trusty canon, it does focus pretty quick!
Will be fine if at a certain position on a track for example and youre pretty much just waiting for the car to come.
The macro side of things is interesting... Not quite what I had in mind, but thats what a proper 1:1 macro lens is for smileys/smiley2.gif That will have to be my next purchase smileys/smiley17.gif
Bring on the daylight now!! smileys/smiley14.gif

Wrong Simo... your next purchase should be the Canon EF 50mm/f1.8. A lens that everyone with a Canon SLR should have and the cheapest lens aswell. One of the best lenses Canon ever made. Superb picture quality and because of the f1.8 you get amazing DOF. As is a non-zoom lens you have you use your creativity and it really forces you to make better pics. With this lens you really learn photography!

Hmmm, OK, will take a look at that one. Seems cheap enough at approx £80'ish smileys/smiley2.gif
Dan - this lens was cheap for what it is... in my opinion. It only cost £175.

Not too bad then, I was expecting it closer to the £1000 mark after the price of the one above lol smileys/smiley17.gif

£ 80,-? They're 80 euro's over here so you should be able to get them way cheaper.
£ 175 for a DG lens is pretty good!

Ebay is showing the 50mm/f1,8 at around £55, plus shipping from Hong Kong. Trusty Jessops (expensive, but local!) are showing around £80.
If I cant source one at the right price, I'll send you some dollar to cover the lens and the postage smileys/smiley2.gif
