think ive got a bit of gearbox whine.....
whines when changing down (well thats when i notice, more in 2nd and 1st)
works fine (at the mo)
does this mean its ready for going....if so how long have i got???......got everything for the 16v conversion but cant do the fitting for at least a couple of weeks so idealy could do with this lasting me out for work!!
....i take it driving it slow and smooth would make it last a bit longer???
;)

Your description is not clear enough. Do you mean it whines AS you change down gears or does it whine while driving in those gears. I guess the latter, if so it is general wear and tear ie bearings. Depends on driving style, condition and level of gearbox oil as to how long it will last. I had an axgt years ago and it was as loud as a straight cutt racing box for noise (well nearly!!) so you still got a long time left yet probably. Why not do an oil change for now mate and see how it goes?

Try not shifting down to first until you have come to a complete stop, or crawling along

i was the same with my old vtr, it whines like a supercharger getting louder and louder untill it goes pop,

my vts has a wine in 4th and 5th?? thats it, its un-common for it to be whining in these gears and not any others.

Shouldnt ever downchange to 1st imo anyway, 2nd does the job fine and wont fuck the gearbox over as much. Just put it into first when youve stopped
