Theres a rule of nine for the tappets which meens that when munber 8 tappet is fully down you check number 1 , 8+1=9.
The same, for example, as when number 3 is fully down you check number 6 ,3+6=9.
Alternatively get your self a Haynes, and make sure you set them with engine stone cold!

mine seems really loud too. seems to get noisier as the engine heats up though. :S i did have tappets checked and apparently they are ok. could it be possible for them to have come loose again?

Low oil will cause this noise as well.
