View Full Version : Whining Noise from Engine Area?

Just started today. When in higher gears (4th, 5th). When just touching the gas there is a whining type noise which gets higher piched as you accelerate. It then seems to fade out the faster you go and also doesn't seem to be apparent in lower gears (1st, 2nd, 3rd)...

For example, 4th gear, 30mph, just touching the throttle and its like a constant whining noise...

Anyone know what it could be? Is it anything to worry about or do I just have a bit of a noisy gearbox?

Thanks :y:

Just normal gearbox wear. Mine starts to whine a bit over 75 in 5th. Dont worry about it for now buddy.

Ok cheers mate. Just a bit worried seeing as the gearbox is only on just over 50k and it only started to be noticeable today!

Will new gearbox oil help at all?

I'm on 62k nearly now. An oilchange will probably help keep it going for a good few years yet though. It's on my "to do" list lol

Yeah. I know it varies but how long do gearboxes generally last for? I'm suprised at 50k i'm getting a whining noise tbh. 80k plus and i'd expect it...

I'm on my 3rd box now, and my cars only on 80k. Plastic peices of shit.

Start whineing, then if you take it easy.. should last a few k miles.

My 1.4 box was screaming for months, finially gave up. And started to sound like it was eating itself.

Bad times. Each time you've bought a new gearbox, have you bought them second hand? How much do they go for roughly?

n yeah, got them second hand. 1.4 box cost me 40 notes, and 1.1 ones cost me 20 notes.

Ive got another 1.1 box what i got for 30 notes, just for when this one goes. I'll never go back lol.

Jesus that's cheap! I was expecting you to say £150+ as I know there was an S one in the for sale section for that. You don't recommend S boxes with an S engine then?
