View Full Version : How can I tax?

Mieran
30th September 2009, 13:51
Bought a car yesterday and the tax runs out today.

I have a MOT certificate but not the insurance policy or log book yet.

I have tried online but the document reference number is too long for the field they have? :geek:

What shall I do?

you dont need the log book, just the small part of the v5 you get.

You cant tax it without insurance.

park the car off road until it is insured then get it taxed. you cant drive the car any ways. you have no insurance!

or if the car is insured then ring the company and tell them to send you a temp copy of the cert in an email, thats what they did with me!

and ytou dont need the log book, just the grreen slip, and if you bought a car and dont have that, you are a fool!

think you get up to 7days after the reminder date anyway but dont quote me on it, hopefully you would have gpt it insured and the v5 form back by then

you dont need the v5 form.

Thats the whole point of the small tear off, its proof the vehicle is yours whilst the v5 is sent off.

the law states you can drive your car with no tax disc for 5 days this is because of the delay online so get some emergency day insurance and get yourself a tax disc

The law states you cannot drive a car with or without tax if the tax disc is not displayed.

Edit: I is wrong, As of September 08 you can for 5 working days after the old tax disc has expired as long as you have applied for a new one. :D

you can drive the car for 5 days without a tax disc if you have taxed online. you normally need a valid mot and insurance to tax the car. anyway why tax it this month? your going to lose a month just wait till tomorrow.

if your doing it online it takes 2 or 3 days for them to get the record of your insurance if you have only just taken it out.
you just need your ref no ( on v5 tear off bit) and reg online and they them check the mot and insurance. mite be that they havent got record of your insurance yet

I just done my tax on the BM.

did it online said I had MOT and insurance so you do need both.
if not then why would they put such a thing? to say you have both you can now proceed with payment?.

as previously stated the law states you can drive the car for 5 days after tax expires AS LONG as you have purchased and are awaiting your new tax disc in the post.

the green slip from the V5 also known as the V5C/2 is proof of new ownership and are awaiting the new logbook.

you should have had 24 hours insurance on it anyways for you to drive the car back home in the first place. if you crashed a claim would have gone against the policy holder at the time for that car which would have been the previous owner. if you had FULL COMP insurance you would be ok as long as the previous owners insurance was fully comp and also stated it can be used by othe motorists..........which alot of the time well almost all the time EVERYONE forgets aobut when they go to pick up a new car they have purchased lols.

If you got insurance over the t'internet you should be able to print out a cover note, which would act as insurance certificate till documetns arrive threw the post i believe.

I need to enter the document reference number to proceed, the number I got is 12 digits but online only lets you enter 11. :geek:

Everything I got of Elephant got the Saxo details on, haven't received anything yet which shows new car info.

log book (or new owner slip - valid for circa. 2 months), insurance certificate (cover note is not allowed anymore, however those 1 month certificates that companies send out if you pay monthly to make sure you don't cancel and keep the documents are valid for tax reasons, as long as in date), m.o.t certificate, if you don't have them all, you cant tax your car simple as.

only advice i can bring is to ring insurance company and ask if they can send the certificate any quicker :)

They should only take an orginal insurance certificate and not a home print out
realy dpends how good/vigilant the person behind the counter is.
Cant tax it online until the v5 logbook is in your name.
Otherwise it would get sent to the last keeper
