Evening gang.

Me and the misses are discussing about moving out into a 1 bed flat for the moment as we dont want a kid just yet, were going to give it a few more years yet!

Just wondering what general costs are like really.
We will be looking at paying about £400 a month for a furnished 1bedroom flat or about £300 ish for a furnished studio flat.

Just wondering what like electric, water, gas bills come in at really?

We will be going halves on it all so wanting to know what prices were looking at each

300 - 400 Pounds? Bloody hell thats cheap!

On a 3 bed semi, Me and the misses were putting away £70 each, every week on payday. It went into a separate bank account and all our direct debits(Gas, Electric, Water, Council Tax, Sky. etc) came out from there. Then at the end of each month there would be enough in there to write a cheque to cover rent.

Only thing we had to add on top from our own banks was food shopping. Everything left in our accounts was ours to do as we pleased, (plus cover our own personal direct debits) :)

Lower council tax for a flat, alot only have electric not gas, less rooms to heat, etc thats what i base this upon

yeah i agree, about £400 for all bills etc, i was surprised you could rent a place for £300 - 400 pcm.

Edit, it all adds up tho.

£100 for council tax
£80 electric
£50 for Sky
£200 for food
£20 internet

Yeah, that sounds about right.

I'm paying £445 a month rent on a 2 bedroom groundfloor apartment. The bills are as follows..

£82 Council Tax
£28 Water
£27 Phone & Internet
£40 Electric (We don't have gas)

Remember you will need to pay TV Licence (£142.50 a year) and Contents Insurance.

Mr_X
30th September 2009, 20:34
im answer to your question, if the place that im staying in wasnt owned my my parents it would cost me £1,100 a month, thats £650 rent and about £450 on other bits. I just pay the £450 atm, im trying to save for a huge deposit but a new car is so appealing

I would make sure you can live comfy as in my experience something always crops up that needs £££ spend on it.

Mr_P
30th September 2009, 20:38
As per Mr_X. House we're staying in is owned by my auntie and costs us £325 rent pcm. That includes our home & contents insurance.

Going rate for a 3 bed semi is somewhere along the lines of £450 - £600 pcm around this neck of the woods.

i pay 450 a month for rent.

virgin with net is £60 gas and electric is about £50 a month. i dont pay coucil tax as the missus is still a student, all in here name

then mobile fone bill £40, chow £200

its alot more than you first think, plus i pay my parents mortgage off aswell, so my outgoings on houses is a grand a month easy, but worth it, as im now the owner of the parents house, and makes it easy for me to get a mortgage

its all the little things that add up

£16 phone line
£8 internet
£40 water
£40-£60 on gas & electric
£200 food
£24 roughly on tv license
then there's councul tax, rent, contents insurance all your bills that you allready have.

we spend about £1400 a month on all our bills

i suppose it all depends. are you both working?? good jobs????

A rented place for 400 per month +
say 10 - 15 per week for electric+
10 - 15 per week for gas +
40 - 80 shopping per week +
100 per MONTH tax

400 rent
400 bills and shit + shopping
100 tax.

if either of you are on low paid job

cut the council tax by half as council will pay a fair bit for it. they will also help you with rent.

When i was a student and the bird was working the council paid 350 out of a 425 rent per month

prob most of you may disagree but council houses are prob the best options....

me and the missus will be paying £200 a month. for a 2 bedroomed house newly redecorated with garage and drive and a large back garden and a small front yard.

oviously council tax and bills ect will bump it up but still saving money on private rented.

also any probs with the house council come out and fix it.

and before any of you moan no we aint on benefits we both work..

Couldn't agree more!

Cheap rent, your forever if you wish, the only problem is they are often in shitty areas!
If you are originally from said shitty area tho it's not really an issue ;)

i dunno man, it all depends on your life style really.

this is how mine works...

i live in a 2 bedroom house in manchester.

the rent is £400, unfurnished.

i pay out about £1000 a month, thats TV license, Virgin TV Phone and internet (20 mg net), elec, gas and council tax. (baring in mind the house is old, no insulation, and really high ceilings, so takes about £20 to heat the fucker!)

the water comes every 3 month, but from the £1000 there is usually some odd £££ knocking about so that usually covers the water.

i have a massive fish tank, and play xbox live 24 hours a day on the weekend! so i use alot of elec aswel.

one thing i will say to you though... this is important. this is where i fucked up and thats why i am now in debt....

when you move in, ring british gas, give them elec and gas meter readings... and then tell them you want to go on pay as you go. i didnt do this!! i then ended up pwing them £1000!! they were sending me out bills and i was payin them, not knowing they were estimates, then the next meter reading you give them tell you that you owe them a huge amount!

with pay as you go you can control what you are using. they will put you on a new meter and then you just top up once a week. easy as chips!

good luck!

thats not allways the best way, we looked at council houses and they wanted £60+ a week for rent so we went private and got housing allowance so only pay £30 a week for a 2 bedroom house

How long is your tenancy and what amount of decorating etc can you do?
Did you have to pay any deposits /rent in advance?

it was for 6 months when we moved in to show commimtent, now it is until we no longer want to live here. we can do what we want with the house, paint it, put holes in walls etc. had to pay a small deposit but it wasnt the high amount most people want. we pay hardly any council tax aswell

Cool, you are one of the lucky ones, most private tenancies are for like 6-12 months and landlord can decide not to renew at end of term, and most places charge bond equal to a months rent and want a months rent in advance so usually about a grand upfront.

Main issue with council places is you move in with nothing usually, most of the time (here atleast) not even carpet or curtain rails etc, let alone appliances
