You get 7 days to say that your new ones on the way to allow for DVLA/Postage delays.

No you dont.
With it all being done on computer they can tell/be told if you have applied
even if you have then can do you for failing to display

you dont get any time mate, they send you the slip a month before its due and this is seen as enough time to sort it out

I see a fair few cars parked around (and alot of motorbikes) whose tax ran out months and months ago.
Saying that, I saw a Rozzer plonking a fixed penalty notice on a Peugeot 205 in Morrisons car park last week, so they are out there!

You can legally drive or keep your vehicle on the road whilst displaying your old tax disc for up to 5 working days
But get it renewed ofc :)

its very specific on the dvla website.
you can drive without a valid taxdisk for 5 days once your current tax has expired. however, these must be the first 5 days of the month and you must have ordered a tax disc online BEFORE your current disc expired.
if you havent bought it online you get 0 days grace

non.
the idea is you get 5 days after your tax disc has expired. so long you have already purchased a tax disc online and are awaiting for it to arrive in the post :).

they say all this crap, but when i brought my car it was NOT declared sorn by either myslef or previous owner.
Then it was kept in my garage for 3 months still without telling them a word and they never once contacted me or sent me a letter.

same here, the computer system isn't automated it's admin controlled so a lot of people don't get caught, you could get unlucky though!

personally think disks are becoming a pointless thing now, i do think they should have some kind of paper work for tax, but now that cops know if your car is taxed just by putting your reg into the anpr they are becoming a bit pointless, obv some paperwork of some form should still be neccessary to produce (like you would with m.o.t or insurance) incase of computer error/update delay :)

id be more concerned about getting caught driving without tax than getting a fine from the dvla

yh i agree with this. but i suppose it would make it easier for ppl to avoid payin cos of no visual check and not all police cars are fitted with the anpr cameras, and it helps to remind when its due. ways round it though i suppose.
and they dont have to 'put it in' cos the whole point is its automatic lol. but im sure u knew that lol
