Does the 1.1 box always use shorter shafts then the VTS? Does a MK1 1.1 o/s drive shaft have an intermediate bearing?
Thinking of getting a MK2 1.1 box on my MK1 VTS (which has a MK1 o/s strut and MK2 n/s strut lol)

*waits for the knowledgeable people to post slating the idea*
If you want a better gearbox, then you should be looking more towards S1/S2/XSI boxes from the info I have read on here...

Im not looking for a better box just looking to replace my fucked one. Looking at ratios from the 106oc some 1.1 box's seem to be about on par with VTS box's.
Anyway I dont want this thread to be about 1.1 box ratios just the questions I asked.

Seconded, but ill post what I do know.
The VTS box is designed to be quite sporty and accelerates quicker than the 1.1 boxes, so actually fitting a 1.1 box will decrease your acceleration!
As said the series 1 106 rallye (1.3 8v) is the fastest gearbox, closely followed by the 106 XSI (1.4 8v).
edit: just saw you posted you're not bothered about it altering the speed, so feel free I guess :)

don't put a 1.1 box on it - the vtr/vts/xsi/rallye boxes have 'sports' clusters for a reason.
I used to have a 1.4 gearbox on mine, now with an S2 I can confidently say don't fit the wrong box!!

Its an interesting topic but one id like in a separate thread! Looking at the ratios you get the same cluster as a VTR box but the final drive is higher then a VTS/1.6 rallye box resulting in a box similar to the VTS from what iv looked at. But like I said this argument is for somewhere else and also the fact you can get a very low mileage 1.1 cheap as opposed to a high mileage VTS/GTi box which has probably been cained anyway.

Anyway original questions:

Does a MK1 1.1 o/s drive shaft have an intermediate bearing?

1.1 diffs are smaller and weaker aswell ;)

1.1 shafts are 1 piece, no intermediate bearing

Can you take off the bearing holder or will the shaft run through it?

The bearing holder is removable, but why in gods name do you want to run 1.1 shafts? the intermediate bearing is there to help eliminate torquesteer from unequal length drive shafts.

4TH is about 6mph shorter. 5TH is about 5mph longer IIRC.
I've put a 1.1 box on mine as a temp box. 7k later is sounds like a bag of bolts. Box has 56k on it.
VTS DriveShafts fit 1.1 box its a straight swap, barring some sensors (reverse light etc)

I thought 1.1 shafts were shorter but matey above has pretty much sumed up what I wanted to know.

1.1 box goes on.
Crunches like fuck at high revs because of the synchros.
Felt slightly slower imo, then blew the diff in it without trying.
I only had them as the pikeys who were meant to send me a VTS box kept sending them and i needed the car on the road.
To get you up and running in the mean time there is no harm sticking it on.
I ran my standard Shafts with mine.

And here's me whos having no problems with a 1.1 box and hasn't in the past year and a half (fair enough most of that time was 8v), and that was on track and 1/4...
Anyway, he wasn't asking whether the box was any good, just about the shafts, which Ryan's answered for him.

Is the acceleration as bad as everyone suggests? And is the box still usable even though it sounds rough, have you cained the car or has the box just detroyed itself?
Basically im at uni and need a decent box as im paying someone to fit it the 1.1 as id be buying it off the garage, once im back home il muck about to my hearts content swapping over dodgy VTS's box's.
Edit: sorry took some time writing that and others have replied, thinks iv got all the answers iv wanted. Thanks all for the input, you can discuss gear ratios till the world ends now if you want :P

Well at a recent 1/4 mile day, I was running 15.0 all day, where most GTis were running mid 15s. I'd say it's not done mine any harm.

You can but you can also get fucked over, iv been mucked about with 2 gearbox's on this car now and one was bought from a so called reputable company and im getting sick of it tbh. If I can get a 1.1 box and it works its about 1/4th of the price and it should work properly as id be buying it from the garage fitting it! Even if it only lasts 7K its that much cheaper that its probably worth it, the VTS box iv got on now hasnt last anywhere near 7K (partly my fault though)!
Like a said before once im home il be happy to go out and buy 2nd hand box's as its only my time wasted not all my money, if a garage is going to fit a box for me I need to know its going to be good.

The shafts its not about the length as I said the vts one is 2 piece, 1.1 1 piece.
The 2piece shafts are better to eliminate torquesteer.

Assuming you have VTS driveshafts... just use them as normal.
1.1 box won't last you long if you are going to rev it hard. Acceleration will be near on identical mate, hardly going to notice it. As I said 4th is shorter.

i've also heard that 1.1 shafts are hollow ... so i wouldn't recomend you use them ...
the vts shafts should fit fine anyway mate :y: just be gentle with the box ...

If you are destroying diffs, I suggest you take a look at your driving style tbh ;)
