I don't bother to cover anything up, i just give a quick spray of degreaser over the whole engine, then i have a hose pipe with a trigger so i quickly jet it all off in one go.

a little bit of water won't hurt as everything in there is designed to be moderately water proof anyway, its just drenching your engine with tons of water that should be avoided.

after that you can just wipe everything over with a towel.

i use this technique everytime i wash the car as it only takes about 2 mins and this ensures that no dirt ever builds up in there.

I usually clean my engine by hand with some degreaser in a spray gun and some water in a spray gun, a few cloths and a few toothbrushes & wheel brush. its much easier then you don't get a rotten engine loom etc from sneaky pools of water and you can make the engine alot cleaner.

I try and avoid pooling water up anywhere I can as the engine bay seems to rust first on the sax.

But if using a jet wash, Alternator, Battery, ECU are main bits and air filter if you have an open one. And avoid spraying over the ecu, fuse box area. And try not to get the sound deadening wet.
