hey im from exeter in devon an lately the old bill have really bin cracking down on exhausts!!! (bastards!) i got pulled 3 times in 1 day an had the same lecture about if the exhaust fitted to the vehicle is not standard or not made by the manafacturer then it is illegal!!! so i now have 21 days to put it to standard!! i have also bin told by a few friends that if you have a sports and performance car then you are allowed a sports and performance exhaust as long as it aint above 120db which is loud!!! has any had similar problems wiv pigs in ur area, is what im hearing true????

Exhausts these days can't be much lounder than standard.

And as far as being under 120db goes...... If you've got an exhaust that's anywhere fucking near that you'd be getting pulled left right and centre. 120db would be absolutely unbearable. In other words, You're mates don't know what they are talking about.

Thats a load of bollocks mate, because going by that if you bought a replacement standard exhaust from anyone other than citroen it would be illegal?

Say you got a new one fitted at kwik fit or something, it wouldn't be manufactured by citreon, it would be some cheap immitation imported from China, and that would be illegal.

Have you done something to upset the fuzz, maybe thats why their targetting you and your car?

there is a very simple answer to this.

SAXO

no matter what you do to them they will always be targeted by the fuzz. and thats FACT!

what theyre telling you to replace it in 21 days because its illeagal? what the fuck, ignore it and tell them to do one.
i have 4 coming out of mine and never had any trouble from the police, sounds like a couple of idiots with nothing better to do with their job.

I think the coppers meant that the exhaust should be no louder than an exhaust of OE specification, not that it has to be made by the car manufacturer.
120dB would be about as loud as standing under Heathrow airport runway 1 whilst a concorde (yeah I know they are out of service now lol - they were always getting bollocked for being too loud) was taking off overhead - now thats LOUD!

As for loud exhaust miens around 90 maybe 95 db and never get troubles. Most uk tracks are 95-105 db restriction though.

As for yours mates havgin 120 db LOL f1 cars are 115 i think threw tunnels eg monti carlo.... what do your mates drive exatully to make those noises.

My Blueflame cat-back fitted to my Honda is a hell of a lot louder than standard, but I've never been given any grief from the old bill. I even overtook a marked traffic car on the motorway (exhaust is loudest around 3500-4500rpm, so around 70-80mph), and they did look but didn't say/do anything.

Must be the kids in little French hatchbacks they're cracking down on ;)

Normally bf's are lowdest low revs and quite around motorway speeds, never heard of them being your way around.. does it not do you in mate?

My scorpian is LOUD but at a constant 70,80 or 85 with little dabs of throttle its barable.

Up to 80 in 5th its bloody loud mate (if I drop to 4th its better), after that it does die off. After about 4200-4500rpm it does phase out, but up til then everyone can hear it lol.

A bit annoying at motorway speeds, but then if I go a little quicker its fine.

Yeah I'd imagine the Scorpion has quite a roar at motorway speeds also...

MiniGibbo

Mines worst when motorway crusing which gets it nice and hot then dropping to 50 threw road works. just under 2k at 50 in 5th... no fun :(

Decibels are a non linear measuremant - 20 decibels is not twice as loud as 10 decibels, it's alot more than that.
Does anyone remember about 10 years ago there was massive uproar in the bike world when laws were changed so that newly registered bikes had to be 93 dB rather than 96? Turns out that 96 is nearly twice as loud as 93.

benfurio

ben what exhaust do you have?

i got a powerflow cat back exhaust with 3 inch tip, in my opinion it is not loud at all, i hang around with 6 other saxo owners and mine is probably the quietest out of all of em, but we have all bin told ou exhaust are illegal!!!

LeeM
3rd October 2009, 10:18
doesnt volume double with every single decibel increase?

ive never been pulled with mine, and it can be loud but i drive sensibly whcih probably helps

MiniGibbo
3rd October 2009, 10:19
Tell the fux to prove it, you have a cat i asume and you car has a valid mot.

My exact words would be "all i can say officer to what trying to tell me baring in mind my car is completly road legal...fuck you"

NICK2506

since January this year if your exhaust is louder than the standard exhaust it will fail your MOT. Not many MOT centres actually bother about it, but technically they should

LeeM
3rd October 2009, 11:12
mine was mot'd this year with an ashley on, that was loud as fuck and passed fine

Jazz

Surely not... As long as it falls within the prescribed noise regulations standard/non-standard exhausts shouldn't matter.

yeah mine passed with a supersprint center section with no silencer and a piper backbox.
as its a newish rule its down to the descression of the mot tester, and at the oment they're quite relaxed about it.

i know....look at the bottom 2 boxes on this page:

b. an exhaust system mounting missing, or in such condition that it does not fully support the exhaust system

Note: An alternative mounting deice is acceptable providing the system is secure and the system is not likely to fail prematurely.

Mines a fail then lol.

Cable ties ftw

Cable ties ftw

yeah i had cable ties over my rubbers. but that passed :)

Chr15

I only used one.

One of the hangers on the car wouldnt line up with the rubber mounts. Ill stick the standard system back on when its MOT time just to be on the safe side.

but its down to the MOT tester. i have the silencer removed by a supersprint centre section and have a 3" piper backbox. and mine passed in july.

My mot is up in a couple of months iirc.

My passenger side skirt and passenger headlight is held on with cable ties. :y:

Hopefully it doesnt fail on them :P lol

Smurphious

My 205 and Nova I could be heard leaving work and getting home they used to be properly loud. Pretty sure my VTR would be the same its a mile journey.

I wanna change the chavvy 5" soot pipe my Saxo came with so shouldn't be a problem when my MOT comes around.

Cov_Rob
3rd October 2009, 11:52
I used to have a 1.3 mini with a twin DTM exhaust and that was about 110db on full throttle. Even had it tested at 4 shows to prove it :P It was unbarable on the motorway, but i loved annoying people lol I never had any problems from police.

I researched this before getting that exhaust, theres no law against how loud your exhaust can be BUT if its too loud there are ways around it for the police, i.e public nusance, public disturbance ect

Smurphious
3rd October 2009, 11:53

If the police tell you to rev your engine tell them you're still running it in and you don't want to invalidate the warranty!

As taken from the MOT handbook.

“a silencer in such condition, or of such a type, that the noise emitted from the vehicle is clearly unreasonably above the level expected from a similar vehicle with a silencer in average condition.”

Interestingly it says nothing about induction noise ;)

MiniGibbo
3rd October 2009, 20:34
Everytime mine goes in for a test i always watch them drive it in rev it do the "gawww" face look at the engine brakes etc then actully test it

Ive had a spare since i braught the car showing white cable threw it and theyve never even checked it. All i get is "nice car bet that goes well" thats three passes in a row now from them :P
