Gearbox help! Bang and clutch pedal dropped

driving along and had my foot on the clutch and bang it fell from under my foot to the floor.
couldnt select any gears etc and a terrible grinding when i pushed the pedal down with the 1inch worth of movement left in the pedal


managed to get the car home slamming it into 3rd and coast home.

i tightened up the cable and it bought the pedal back upto height. It also now allows me to select gears. issue is the pedal is extremely soft and the pedal is very high inside the car.

when i take my foot of to pull away of after a gear change there is a huge crunch then its fine.

Any ideas? its late and havent had a chance to look it over. plus im tired and had a huge row with the missus so not thinking straight

there is a chance its both, its soo weird, the pedal just dropped to the floor and went all spongy.
never experienced that before.

can the fork arm be replaced i cant remember?

Id be pretty confident its the thrust bearing you know. Say if you didnt have a thrust bearing, then it would be piss easy as it isnt actually doing anything. So effectivley its pushing the pedal is just pulling the cable through with the arm on its pivot.

If the release bearing hasnt been clipped in then it could be that which it does sound like

clutch bearing, mine done the same fitted new cltuch and after a week or two the clutch fork came past the clips on the bearing, was a faulty bearing and the lugs had jus give way, exactly the same symptoms as yours

I had a problem after fitting a new clutch whereby i coudln't select gears, so tightened the clutch cable, but could see a lot more thread past the fork than before.

Removed gearbox, and found the clutch release bearing had melted, and fubar'd itself. I sent the whole clutch back to where I bought it and got a full refund with no questions asked.

i have read about the bearings melting. i will be taking the box off tomorrow and seeing what the damage is. straight to euro car parts i will be going with a shaking fist.

Same company I bought and returned mine to - was a LUK one, but I think it was just a bad bearing, I'd happily fit LUK again.

do it abit cheaper and you might have a pm

mates melted, took the inspection plate of and all the bearings dropped out and hit me haha, actual metal lpates from the bearing and the plastic casing had welded to the input shaft, was well fooked, bearings are only about a fiver from euro parts iirc

hehe thanks to my brilliant towing skills i managed to get u home safe and sound tom! Did u end up taking it all apart after i left? Cheers for doing my car tom!x

thanks my lovely, really helped me out :) at the moment my engine and gearbox is sat in my garage. the car is outside it :P

battled for hours to get the box back on with no luck. so whipped the engine out instead.

will be back together tomorrow i hope.
