I need some advice I've been on confuzed.com and found several prices for cars on my own policy when I'm 17 and past my test
saxo furio roughly £1600
saxo vtr nearly £2000
fiesta 1.6 zetec s nearly £2000
astra sxi 1.6 16v roughly £1600
These prices arn't bad on third party fire and theft with quinn
but if I put my mum as the policy holder and me as a named driver the prices are about half
Now I know people will say this is fronting and illegal, but you have the option of putting you as the main driver and the price is still the same. I'm just wondering if I should do this?

a 1.1
you're usually asking for trouble if you go for anything higher as a first car.

But a 1.1 saxo is around 1600 so what's the point in that if I can have a astra sxi for the same price

fair point... rather than looking short term, it might be best to consider the total cost of the insurance over a few years.... for instance
your own policy
1st year - £1600
2nd year - £800
3rd year - £600
4th year - £500
it goes down because your age goes up and you get no claims bonuses too!
total cost - £3,500
fronted:
1st year - £1000
2nd year - £900
3rd year - £800
4th year - £700
£3,400
not much difference... except when you come to getting your own insurance, the price goes skyhigh again.
Go with your own policy.

saxo 1.1 1,661.44
106 1.1 1,538.92
a furio is the same money as the saxo 1.1

also you have to take into acount the cost of the car
an astra sxi 2000/2001 you could get one for a grand
a saxo vtr 2000/2001 you could get one for a grand or less
but the furio's in my opinion are overpriced due to the fact they arn't many for sale
I regards to insurance I could go on my parents with a car I actually like and then go on my own policy when I can afford
Or have a shit car I don't like still pay a stupid sum eg a corsa b,old fiesta

I'm 17 and have a Saxo VTR so wouldn't listen to them lot - personally I went with my own policy to build up my NCB :)

go smaller as there also cheaper to run mate.
my first car at 17 was a S2 escort RS Turbo and i was paying £1700 then moved to a 1.3 fiesta and dropped to £980 !!
just have a look around and try different cars also mate.

At 19 I could have my own policy then which would be with 2 years driving experiance and with no ncb and employed not a student
third party
saxo vtr £820.25
fiesta zetec s £847.55
fullly comp
saxo vtr £1,153.10
fiesta zetec s 1,196.15
So It won't be that bad so my view is have a good car you like for two years on your parents policy then if you can afford it go on your own. Or your just paying 1600-1700 in insurance on a car that you don't really like and proberly then don't look after it and crash it.

Go on your parents name for first year or 2 with directline. With directline you build your own no claim bonus's as a named driver! Sorted.

I've been on direct line as a named driver I get the impression you can only use the no claims with them, also you can't mod your car even cosmetically, and when I put in a quote on my own policy they can't give me details so it sounds as if it's going to be expensive.

Only problem if you go under your mums name mate is you wont get your own No Claims Bonus building up...
Gunna be a bugger when you get your own policy and the price goes back up.

A furio will be way more fun then a 1.6 sxi astra.
I contenplated with the idea a few months back... but then decided that the fact the astra is heavy and not as good handling... the saxo will do just fine.
Also more fuel on a 1.6 sxi 16v :homme:
Tbf, im 18 and have been driving like 8 months. My first car is a furio... which i still own, paying 2k atm fully comp and my own insurance policy, paying 2k for a furio, or 2k for a 1.1... i just got the best car i could.
