depends what you want to do as i dont thinks there a mod chip as such but you can get connectivity kits to hack the firmware on the dvd drive so you can play backed up games etc.

Only thing iv heard is that you cant go on live as microsoft lock the console down. Dunno how true that is though.

What chip is he using?
Microsoft can detect if a consoles fireware has been tampered with and they can ban your xbox 360 off live. But i have only heard it happen a few times and i heard they call you up first to tell you its been changed so you can update it back to microsoft firmware.

I had mine chipped, it was ok as i could copy my own games as i had a dual layer cd drive, I went online a few times and got away with it, but when the big update came and they changed the dashboard i got rid of it as they would have found out... if you dont connect to live they should never find out :)

They cant stop your xbox from working it just blocks any connection to xbox live.

You get it 'flashed' not chipped fyi.
Ive had mine Flashed for about a year now and never had any problems at all with live. Had all the new updates and still no problem. Gotta make sure you get the 'New Flashes' though otherwise you will get caught straight away Im imformed.

MS are forever updating the system and many of the updates are purely to stop hacked systems from working. Some of the newer games come with updates on and you can not play the game with out installing the updates. Also as people have said systems and people accounts can be black flagged and blocked from live. If you really are in to live and your game point score thingy you may not wish to mess about with your system.

As far as Im aware they carry out a ban wave just before xmas, november time ish I think, so that all the live addicts with modded consoles go out and buy another one for xmas. Very sly but a pretty epic business move lol

If you get it flashed properly, and get games which are 'hidden' and cannot be identified as backups you'll be fine. Ive spoke to people who have had theres flashed for years, just gotta make sure you know what your doing.

I've had my "flashed" about a month now and (touch wood) I've not had a problem playing the games online. Just one thing though... don't get it "chipped" but "flashed"... its the safer way.
But you have to keep an eye out on new releases, as microsoft are paying some of the big sites to upload copies of their new titles which Microsoft are then using to block xbox users! The new Halo game had this and they blocked 50,000 users or something!
So if your going to get a new release... get it a couple of weeks after the release and do not play new games before they are released! Not even offline!

I agree with this comment. Alot of comments here seem to be hear-say from that guy in the pub. I have had my console flashed for about 18 month now and I play some copied games occasionally online, but the games I play all the time like cod4 I have a proper version that I purchased. Aslong as the games have been stealthed they ARE undetectable. The only way they can find you out is my monitoring the RPM of your disk drive, as it spins slightly slower. But they won't do it as this is time consuming and has to be done manually, console by console.
