Nice one! My 360 elite got one red light and the e74 graphics error, so I sent it off to Microsoft for repairs. I got it back and now it can take anywhere from 1-10 attempts to get it to actually boot up when I switch it on >.>

Thats what I mean, mine is also "chipped" so no chance in getting it through warranty :(

How long has it worked for since you fixed it? Mine lasted about 5 hours, fixed it 2 days ago. Not sure why it's gone wrong again, maybe I applied too much paste or not enough? I dont know.....but I'm letting microsoft deal with it now. Once they send me another one back I'll just sell it on ebay and get one of the new jasper edition elites.

Does MicroSoft know that you tried to fix it your self?? When you open up the xbox...the warranty is invalid straight away.

Just did a quick search, seems like I may have tightened the bolts that secure the heat sink too much or not enough, feeling an urge to have another go at it now as I dont want to be xboxless for 2 weeks+

They wont open up my xbox when they recieve it, they'll just check the warranty seal is still intact which it is even if it is peeling a little on the edges. By the time they open it and realise I've tampered with it I will hopefully have recieved another one back from them. If not I havent lost anything and they'll just send my xbox back.

They dont have to go into the xbox to see if it has been tampered with. To get in the xbox there is a screw behind a shiney reflective sticker...if that has been tampered with then they wont fix it.

I dont know lol. There is one on the xbox controller so i thought that there would be one on the xbox itself.

MicroSoft will not receive your xbox try it on their TV and send you a new one. They WILL check it to see whats wrong. There is too many people 'chipping' and fixing their own xbox's....MicroSoft aren't stupid ;)

There is indeed a silver strip that I've broken that goes accross each side of the case.

And with the Pro kit you basically fuck off the xclamps, and they give you precise made washers and screws then when tightened fully give you that perfect connection. Dazed did you overheat the console like they tell you to so that it melts the solder. If not do that and it will be a permenant join.

ALSO you should replace the pads on the ram chips with rubber ones as the ones microsoft are about as usefull as a chocolate teapot there meant to apply preasure but they just mold around the chip =\

Microsoft will be recieving hundreds of xbox's a week, they don't have the time/employees to open up every single xbox and check what's wrong. They will just check the warranty seal so that they know no one has taken the xbox apart and so the warranty will still be valid. When I took mine apart I was careful not to break it just in case the x clamp fix didnt work.

Thats why turn around is massive sometimes, it's much shorter thesen days since the Jasper motherboard was released but a massive firm won't skip checking them, maybe not inside, but if they go to the area that they know is broken (heatsinks) and notice it's been tampered with, it will be sent back.

What Alex said.

MicroSoft will not just send out new xbox's everytime they get a 'broken' one in. It's a waste of money. Trust me...they will look for tampering and 9/10 they will find what they are looking for and just send you your broken one back.

Fair enough, well I'm gonna try fixing my one again then and see how it goes. If I still get no luck I'll send it off as I have nothing to lose, if that fails then I guess Ill just have to fork out for a new console :n:

lolz Dazed, you think they arnt going to notice if its been pealed off? they will know straight away its been tampered with, the only place that will take the console in without even testing or looking at it, is a store like game if its still under store warrenty, because they just sent it back to microsoft and get there money back on it for been faulty.

But yeh, miscrosoft will check if its been tampered with, and even if you didnt break the seal, you think they wont notice your bodge job trying to fix it?

It will be sent straight back to you broken still, and probably say TWAT in black marker on the inside for the next time you give it a pop :)

lol CHILL. Well I read somewhere as long as the seal isnt ripped or removed then it's fine, you can buy new seals as well if you need to. You're probably right but like I said I've got nothing to lose and if I can get a repaired xbox out of it then it's fine.

They go on the underside of the motherboard next to the x-clamps theres four of them. The pads maintain a constant pressure on the RAM chips so the solder doesn't melt and holds the chips on =]
EDIT: After seeing those pads tbh I blame them for the RRoD.
