I want to do a massive road trip in America next year, there are three main priorities..
1. Must be at least a month long
2. Hire Car must be big, American and preferably convertible,
3. The trip cant cost more than about £2k
Anyone done this before? Or got any suggestions on places to go/ car hire companies to use? Where is the best/cheapest place to fly to?
Any routes?
Any advice greatly appreciated as we only thought about this the other night, but its definitely going to happen now :D

i hope you find what your looking for i mean a month long road trip costing 2k or less id be bloody tempted to do it myself lol
but id say 400 - 500 for flights to US possibly get it cheaper but id just use standard rate.
about 150 per week for car * 4 600
about 150 - 200 on junk food for a month
400 for gas oops errr petrol
that leaves 300 for crap to spend lol but as i said possibly cheaper

The July just gone I went on a road trip with my dad round America.
New York - Los Angeles, stopping off at roughly 15 states along the way.
Was the best experience of my life!
If you want it to be memorable you will need a hell of alot more than 2k, it cost my dad over 10k for both of us, although we only stayed at Sheratons/Hiltons/Marriotts etc, by staying at cheap motels you could do it for cheaper.
Also we rented a lincoln, as when your travelling 400+ miles a day you want something comfortable! Dont under-estimate the distances lol to get through less than half of Texas it took us about 7 hours, its ridiculous!
We used carhire3000, and they were awsome tbh, no problems what so ever, you will have to pay a drop off fee of around £200, if your dropping it off in another state, unless you plan on doing a round trip
The route we went on was something like this...
New York (3 nights) -> Washington D.C. (we went via train and picked the car up in D.C. as it was cheaper and driving around New York would be an absolute nightmare!)
Washington D.C (2 nights). -> West Virgina (we went via the blue-ridge parkway which is a road up on a mountain, fantastic views, saw a wild black bear too lol)
West Virginia (1 night) -> Tennessee (Nashville)
Tennessee (Nashville, 1 night)-> Tennessee (Memphis)
Tennessee (Memphis, 1 night) -> Texas (Dallas)
Texas (Dallas, 3 nights) -> Texas (Lubbock)
Texas (Lubbock, 1 night) -> New Mexico (Alberqueque)
New Mexico (Alberqueque, 1 night) -> Ohio (Monument Valley)
Ohio (Monument Valley, 2 nights) -> Nevada (Grand Canyon)
Nevada (Grand Canyon, 2 nights) -> Nevada (Las vegas)
Nevada (Las Vegas, 3 nights) -> Los Angeles (Santa Barbara)
Los Angeles (Santa barbara, 4 nights) -> Home!
On the map it looked a little something like this:

I wouldn't say surprised. I'd say the road trip wouldn't be worth it if you worked on a small budget of £2k.

2k?
I'd seriously reconsider your budget.

2k would be spending money, could spend more probably up to 2.5k / £3k pushing it.
flights and car hire would be paid for beforehand separately, and we arent going to be bothered about the quality of accommodation, we will probably end up camping some of the time as the weather should be pretty good.
In terms of travel, to keep costs down we may end up doing a big circle, possibly starting in New York/Chicago, and travelling around the east coast etc..
And to the above post, you'd rather stay at home than travel around America on a budget?

I personally would prefer to spend the money on something else. What's wrong with a Euro-trip via Spa and the 'Ring?

if everything was paid for before handand 2k was spendig money then its would be possible but i would suggest camping for at least 3 quarters of the trip to save on costs it might sound crap camping for 20 days out of 30 but would save a hell of alot of money and better experiance in the end you can tell all yer pals "I Went hardcore on america, fought grizzly bears in downtown new york and shot 20 gangsters in the bronx for fun" lol anyway if you get any more info on costs post it up as it would be something id be interested in. have you thought about going with someone else take care of half the costs for you?

I think the south route is better, especially in the summer!
Ive already seen San Francisco, and apart from Chicago and South Dakota which has Mt Rushmore in, i can't think what else there is to see on the north route?
South route on the other hand has grand canyon, monument valley, las vegas, memphis, dallas, nashville, virginia, D.C. all of which are stunning!
One day i'll do the north route lol
