sounds like the heat shield from what you are saying, if it is then is can be tacked in place or just ripped off, no need to replace the cat

oh right, is this the bit above the cat? or is it actually attached to the cat, as there is 2 metal sheets around it, but they have no movement what so ever :S

its on the cat, cant remember if its above, below or both. just get the car on a ramp with the car running and it should be clear to see where it is coming from. you may need someone in the car revving the engine to get the noise to happen, that what i had to do with my old vtr

yeah mate ive had it over a pit, i've bashed the cat with my hand and the noise is coming from the cat, but i've wiggled and shaken every part around the cat, and still no movement!, is there something inside that could cause the noise?

the heat sheilds are the plates above the cat
if there solid its not the cat
pop the cat off and shake it
if it makes noise its fucked
change it pronto as the internals can come out and damage the exhaust further down

FYI
I just got a new Cat from my local car spares shop for £60+vat. Make sure that you buy the fitting kit (nuts, bolts, springs, spring caps and cups) with the new Cat, because it'll probably be a patent part and the original bolts won't hold the front end of the pipe properly (where it meets the manifold) The kit costs between £10-£15+vat.

don't they fail on MOT as it's not converting the emissions?, my dad had a de-dat on his FTO and it failed on that.
